Do you tip the concierge?
We'll be a stayin at a reel fancy hotel
with a concierge and all...did I have to
tip the little bugger at the end of
my stay?
|
One never HAS to tip anyone for any thing. A tip is something extra. In your case, assuming you present yourself in person the way you do in print, I'm sure the concierge will understand if you leave not tip.
If you are interested in how real people with at least a minimum of class tip and what they tip for, then repost your question asking for more specifics.
|
Patrick you sound like a school teacher I had back in third grade. Lighten up and get off your high horse. If you don't like the question, don't answer it. It's that simple.
|
Jethro must be a troll, his e-mail is "jclampet". Everyone knows Jethro's last name was Bodine.
|
No, not unless you use his or her services. I don't tip concierges if I only ask them a simple question on my way out the door(ie, where's the bus stop?). I've never used a concierge to actually do anything for me, like make reservations or get tickets, etc., but then you would tip.
|
Jethro: You tip only for services (reservations, tickets, arrange a tour, etc.). A simple question (directions to a restaurant) doesn't require a tip unless you felt exceptional help or assistance was given.
|
Patrick: You must truly have a split personality. You spend a whole (rather lengthy) thread humbly asking to be shown "one post" where you had been nasty, sarcastic, arrogant or otherwise difficult so you could remedy that behavior if true. And then, at the first opportunity, you skewer a person whom you obviously believe is beneath you. It is ironic that you chide Jethro about class when you have displayed none. I don't know if Jethro is real or just "funnin" us, but that is the point, we don't know. By-the-way, one would leave "no" tip, not "not" tip.
|
Joe, Patrick may have been riding his high horse on this one, but you are not so sweet all the time either...not too long ago, I replied to a thread, and not only did you not have anything to say to the original poster, you were right up there with the worst of them, insulting and nasty. So before you start lecturing others, be a little less arrogant and sarcastic yourself.

I thought that the concierge was paid to do all those little things that they do and like the desk clerk who does things for you, they do not get tipped. While staying at a very good hotel in Canada, we had reservations made, were given directions and advice by the concierge, who was not always at the desk when needed. We did not tip her, was this a major tourist faux pas or does it require something really special before they deserve a tip?

Oh my god, I accidentally put a "t" on "no" making it "not". Please forgive me, all those of you who have never in your life made a typographical error! I would think anybody in the world could guess that a person using fake hillbilly talk and using the name Jethro Clampett @ Beverly Hills.com was obviously "funning" us. Was it really such a crime that I answered in exactly the same tone that the question was asked in? Does anyone truly believe that my answer was offensive? Is this what is referred to as a "rude" or "nasty" post? By the way, you might note that I did indeed answer the question to the point. "One never HAS to tip anyone for anything", I said. That was an exact and to the point answer to the question. In fact I totally answered his question. Is there any part of his question I didn't answer? Please explain where I have gone wrong? In the future I will really try not to make another horrible single letter typographical error, however.
And really, Jim, could you possibly believe that Jethro is not "funnin" us, and that as you say, "we don't know"? Do you really for one minute believe that this poster's real name is Jethro Clampet or that he really lacks class. I can't believe anyone could be so naive as to think that I have insulted this obviously "fake" poster. Methinks you were looking for a way to "skewer" me and you found one. Congratulations.

Patrick - I wonder why you go to to such great lengths to make a point when you could do so in less words and a bit of a lighter tone? It would be more constructive and facilitate (sp?) better interactions. Just a thought...
|
I guess I just love giving some of you fault finders something else to complain about. Short enough?
|
Maybe sometimes Patrick has to explain things so carefully because he's explaining them to people who are so stupid they can't even figure out that Jethro wasn't real. And to people who couldn't figure out that his first post was answered in the same manner as the question was asked. Didn't you people figure out that he was making light of the idea that Jethro was making a point of his not having any class?
he had no class
|
Sorry. I meant that it was Jethro who had no class, and he was clearly admitting it.

Most european hotels have concierges and they do get paid a decent wage. If they do something extraordinary such as getting theater tickets for a sold out show or restaurant reservations for a place that has a 3 month wait then by all means slip him a twenty. If he is just doing routine things like giving directions or smiling and asking how your day was just respond and keep moving. My experience with conceirges is that they do enjoy their jobs and don't really expect anything other than a polite thankyou and job well done.

Too funny! First someone makes a humorous post creating a classless character and asking a silly question like should a hillbilly tip the concierge bugger in a reel fancy hotel.
Patrick recognizes the humor and posts a direct answer to that fictional character, but open to the possiblility that this poster was just creating the hillbilly character to be funny, Patrick even offers to answer more if the poster is really serious and does want information.
Then someone tells Patrick if he doesn't have an answer he shouldn't post. Yet Patrick did give the answer and that person had nothing to say, but posted anyway. Too funny!
Next a couple of people start degrading each other. One claiming Patrick has attacked the fictional hillbilly who was obviously trying to show no class and even pointing out what is obvious to anyone a simple typing error.
I thought we were here to discuss travel not see how many ways we can find fault with each other.
By the way I think the question has been answered (even if no answer was really being sought). A concierge is only tipped for going out of his way to make any special arrangements like hard to get tickets or difficult restaurant reservations at the last minute.
Now can we get back to discussing travel?
