Do you prefer to stay in Dorsoduro or San Marco in Venice?

I have been researching hotels in Venice. Last time I was there I stayed at a little pensione with only 4 rooms. It was a really small room, but it was New Year's eve so I was happy to get a room.

This time I am going in April. I am looking for a little bigger place. Maybe 3 stars.

Has anyone stayed at Ca'Della Corte (Dorsoduro)or San Moise (San Marco)?

A friend recommended Hotel Paganelli(San Marco)

The pensione where you stayed last time, where was it located?

The following may not be much of a help but here it goes.

I like Dorsodoro area very much, stayed at Pensione Accademia, close to Grand Canal and Accedemia Bridge a few times and once at Pensione La Calcina by the Giudecca Canal. Both 3 stars and fine hotels. You will more likely to get larger rooms at la Calcina although my little preference goes to P.Accademia.

Although located in Dorsoduro, Ca'Della Corte seems close to Piazzale Roma, and not that close to San Rocco nor Frari contrary to what the hotel's web site says. Well that's just my impression from the map. They sure are walking distance. Anyway far from the area of Dorsoduro I like where both hotels I mentioned above are located.

Many say to stay away from San Marco area because it is too busy, too close to San Marco Piazza , etc. However, personally I had rather pleasant experience, stayed 3 times at modest but nice Hotel Mercurio near la Fenice Theater so I woudn't mind staying there either.

Sorry, I don't know either hotels you mention but San Moise is on the main drag, I have passed nearby many times.

Paganelli, I had a stay good enough in Christmas 2006 in their annex just behind the main building. The room itself was not much except the bath room had been redone, somewhat large compared to my small single (no surprise) room but above the reception they have a roof top terrace with tables, where I could go up even in winter for a view of 360 degrees including the San Marco Lagoon and the San Giorgio church. Its location is technically Castello I think although very close to San Marco Piazza. Some people may not like the Riva della Schiavoni location, often it gets too busy with tour crowds. Personally it didn't bother me much. I paid €50 for a single room but it must be much higher in April + they have finished a renovation (an excuse for rate increase).

This is the view from the roof top terrace. I had all 4 sunny and glorius days during that Christmas.

We have always enjoyed renting apartments in Venice rather than hotel stays. If you are staying at least three nights many places can accomodate you. The choices range from one room studios to grand pallazos. Here are a couple of agencies.

I've been to Venice twice and both times stayed on the Dorsoduro (at Pensione La Calcina, a 3-star which I highly recommend) and really enjoyed that location. Convenient yet a little bit removed from the hussle/bussle.

It was somewhere behind St. Mark's Church. I was there 12/30/96 to 1/1/97. It was within a 6 minute walk. Very convenient during the freezing cold weather. But I could literally touch the walls left to right when I outstreached my hands and it was only as long the other way to fit 2 twin beds end on end.

I do remember walking by Alfredo Alfredo restaurant where I ate the best Eggplant Parm I have ever had. Very thin layers. It practically melted in my mouth. I am drooling just remembering it.

I don't need a large room, but this is my first trip with this travel partner. She is not a seasoned traveller and I don't want her to be disappointed. Venice is a magical place!

Ca'Della Corte is at the northernmost edge of Dorsoduro, nt far from Piazzale Roma. Most who enjoy Dorsoduro enjoy the southern part, closer to Accademia.

A friend who has visited Venice many times recently stayed at the San Moise and was very pleased. It didn't hurt that they were bumped up to a suite from their standard room.

I'd choose the San Moise location over the Ca'Della Corte.

My latest favorite in Venice is Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo in Santa Croce.

The Pensione Accademia in the Dorsoduro district was perfect for us. Close enough to walk to things, yet in a quiet area and we felt we were experiencing a gentler Venice. Once I stayed near San Marco, but it was an expensive, luxurious hotel. My vote goes for Dorsoduro, although any hotel that can offer peace and quiet would be good.

San Marco---right next to St. Mark's square. A hotel I will always recommend-www.locandaorseolo.com
You can arrive by boat taxi right to the door and they have a door that opens off the canal right into their living area. Our room looked right out onto the canal and was quite nice. What is perfect about this place are the owners. They will know your name immediately and call you by name every time they see you. After the first breakfast, they know your preferences. Fabulous location---3 minutes to St. Mark's Square but quiet. I love Venice and walking from one side of the bridge to the other is no problem.

I've stayed at the Ca' della Corte and thought it was quite conveniently located, i.e. easily walkable from Piazzale Roma but in a quiet area off a small canal and a pleasant walk through Campo di Santa Margherita and then to the Grand Canal at Ca' Rezzonico.

The hotel is not very big and there's no elevator if that matters to you.

I much prefer Dorsoduro to San Marco, particularly if you've been to Venice before, but I think Ca' della Corte is actually on the edge of San Polo sestiere. In any case, more 'local' than the crowds near San Marco.

I echo Shellio's sentiments--and have stayed at 'Ca della Corte (um, 8 years ago, when it was cheap). I've also stayed at La Calcina in Dorsoduro mentioned above and slightly prefer the 'Ca della Corte location because of its proximity to both Campo Santa Margherita and San Polo. It's lively and has a younger vibe if that's of interest. Or I thought so.

'Ca della Corte also felt more like a pensione than a hotel if that's a big negative to you.

Really all of Venice is beautiful. I wouldn't worry too much about being in the right spot because it's all the right spot.
