Do you prefer hostel, hotels or both?
 

When you guys go to Europe, do you guys stay in hostel or hotel for the whole trip? Because I will be staying a week in each country that I will be visiting in Europe this summer. I will be stay first at hostel for 3-4 days then the last 2-3 days will be at hotel.

There are hostels and hostels. In the UK and Denmark the yha and Danish national hostel chains are fantastic. Hotels can be terrible plus the grading system in Europe are different to the US system

I also like B&B and chambre/table d/hôte.

For stays of five nights or more I personally prefer apartments. More space to spread out, kitchens for preparing meals, more privacy, often a patio to enjoy a glass of wine at the end of a long touring day.

But I get the impression you're young, and might like the social advantages of staying in a hostel.

The advantage of a hotel is often helpful reception and included breakfasts. The advantage of a good hostel is the ability to mingle and meet other travelers.

All depends on your travel style and what you hope to get out of your trip.

For us, it is some combination of hotels, apartments, B&Bs, small inns - just depends on where we are and what we want to do. I'm not big on hostels, but sometimes they are good - when we walked the Camino de Santiago, we stayed in pilgrims hostels almost exclusively.

I don't mind sharing a bathroom, but I don't care for sharing a bedroom with strangers, especially with more than one person, so hostels tend not to work for me. Private rooms aren't much, if any, cheaper than a cheap hotel. I did do youth hostels in New Zealand, but I haven't repeated the experience. If you're able to sleep through lights and noise, you might feel differently. If you're principally interested in meeting people I have found that B&Bs (NOT Airbnbs) or small pensions can work.

i recently did the Camino de Santiago and stayed on albergues. The pro is they are relatively cheap but you have to be a pilgrim with a pilgrim passport. The con is they are noisy and up to 20+ people in a room. Private hostels are probably the way forward.
