Do You know - Westward Ho!?

I have had to switch a holiday break at the last minute to Westward Ho! due to a mix up. Does anyone know anything about the area. We will be staying near the beach and town centre. What's the town like? Any good pubs or restaurants? Anything else you can recommend in the area?

Thanks

Buzzy

Please state what country, what city, and so on and maybe someone can help. The only Westward Ho I know is a dump in Las Vegas and the only beach close to it is the McDonald's parking lot that is teeming with "working" girls....

Yes, it'll be very helpful to state what city and country this place is located. Like Curt the only Westward Ho I can think of is in Vegas-never heard of it in Europe!

As this is a European forum and I am not aware of any other places in Europe called Westward Ho, I assume that the questioner is asking about Westward Ho in Devon.
Devon is a beautiful county.

Have a look at http://www.devonlink.co.uk/smtowns/westwardho.html
and
http://www.touruk.co.uk/devon/dev_who.htm
and the more general site http://www.devonfirst.co.uk/

Westward Ho! is probably the only town in Europe with an exclamation mark. It's just north of Bideford in north Devon. Bideford is an historic town but in my opinion is a fairly dreary place with no decent restaurants unlike, say, Dartmouth, an equally historic town in south Devon. You can go to Lundy, an amazingly unspoilt place, for the day (www.lundyisland.co.uk), or Clovelly, just to the west, is a very beautiful coastal village

Westward Ho is not my favorite place but it is not terrible. It is convenient for touring the N Devon coast and down into Dartmoor or over to Exmoor. Make the best of it and use it as a base to see the surrounding area..

And for Curt, Francophile and Sylvia. Westeward Ho! is a very well know town in the UK. Buzzy's title was a lot better than "help with my itinerary" etc. As many Fodorites would know there is a Westward Ho as some small village in Italy ot Germany. Don't be so quick to jump on posters.

Oops - sorry - I didn't mean to lump Sylvia in with my scolding of the othetr two. Meant to delete your name but hit post too fast. Sorry!

Thanks for your replies. I'm sorry it broke into a fight.

My Westward Ho! is the Devon one mentioned. I thought it would be clear because of the exclamation mark. It sounds a bit dull but I am stuck with it now. I do appreciate, however, that there are nice places to see around it. It just happens that a booking for another resort fell through and this is the only alternative they had. It was that or cancel altogether and boy do we need the break.

Thanks Buzzy

Well, I'm certainly glad I waited to find out who/what/where Westward Ho! was.

Any info on why it is called Westward Ho!?

francophile03 Feb 21st, 2003 03:30 PM

Excuse me, Janis, but Westward Ho! may be well-known in the UK, but for those of us not from the UK or familiar with this place, it is understandable our comments. I don't need to be scolded by you.

janis Feb 21st, 2003 06:02 PM

My point was - there are threads every day with titles that do not mention the country. It could be a really small village in Italy or France or anywhere, but because you happen to know of the place you don't slam the poster. Buzzy (who does not need my defense) posted a very simple, clear request.

I just think it is pretty rude to slam into someone just because you have never heard of the Westward Ho!. LOTS of people have.

I can see why newbies are nervous about posting here.

Yes, Westward Ho! is quite well known in the UK (although I have to laugh out loud at the presumption that the post was about some sort of downmarket casino in Las Vegas - another memorable example of people not realising that most of the places in the US are named after much older places in Europe).

I think the name Westward Ho! has some sort of connection with the old, eponymous children's sea adventure book, but I'm not sure whether the book or the place name came first. I haven't been there since I was a child, and don't remember it as a particularly notable town, but it is close to some of the most interesting scenery on the northern coast of Devon and Cornwall. The attractive villages of Clovelly and Combe Martin are close by. Only slightly further afield is Tintagel in Cornwall (with the spectacular castle) and Exmoor National Park.
