do you kknow of a good resturant in Siena centro

I'll be in Siena in April. I looking for a good place for dinner but nothing fancy. I'm sure there are plenty but this is my first visit to this city. I don't plan to have a car. Any ideas?

We like Osteria Le Logge just off the Campo, but you may need reservations.

Hi t,

What's your budget?

Cane e Gato is considered one of Italy's best restaurants. A bargain at about 65E pp.

Hi Tico,

Ristorante Viti was very good and moderately priced; (sorry I don't have the exact address) and across the street there's a very good gelato place!

Cane e Gato at 65E! Is that what it takes to have a real foodie experience in Siena. I'll need a few glasses of wine before I'll want to spend the $.
It would have to be perfection. I'm more interested in food over service. Dress?

By whom? the Fodorite community? Ira?

It is not listed on the Web sites of either Michelin or Gambero Rosso.

I think you'll get a pretty unbiased opinion here from travelers who have actually eaten at the restaurants. Nonetheless, have you looked at the restaurant review section of slowtrav.com? I along with many others have posted numerous recent restaurant reviews for Siena. Check it out, it's a good source.

Agree with Bob. We had lunch at Osteria Le Logge and it was one of our more memorable meals.

Guess I will try all three just to be sure I'm not missing the best one. Thanks "buongiorno" for the tip on slowtravel.com

We ate dinner at Nello and Taverna Tellina and both were good and not expensive.

I have heard good things about Castelvecchio, which is one of three Slow Food choices in Siena. Le Logge also has a good reputation. Neither of these can be called "fancy," by the way.

We enjoyed dinner at La Torre, a small restaurant just a few doors down an alley to the left of the Palazzo Publico when viewed from Il Campo. There is no written menu. The food is unpretentious--homemade pastas,Osso Buco, roast veal shank, etc. but very good. Dinner for two, including salads, pasta, entrees, house wine and desserts was 52E

Tico,

We stayed at the Santa Catarina and the desk person, Lorenza, sent us to Osteria Da Divo...really loved it and have been back twice since..never disappoints...not far from the Centro...

I'm heading off to Italy in -- gasp -- a week.

First two weeks in Rome and Venice (I have NO idea where we'll dine in Venice where we are meeting my *sophisticated* brother and SIL from Greenwich Village -- so suggestions are welcome).

Then: Tuscany -- where we will hunker down in Barberino Val d' Elsa. But we're also looking for a more worldly evening (or 2) in Siena.

So: Keep 'em coming --

tedgale,

Your "sophisticated" brother might really enjoy Da Divo...besides the very good food, it is really atmospheric..the back room has exposed tufa walls from the Etruscan period, and the downstairs room is the tombs area...not likely to find that in the Village ...

Tico.....Whoever mentioned Taverna Tellina, I second the motion...very reasonable, a far cry from 65E's..but excellent, innovative dishes, small place. never rushed.
Another option is on the narrow street next to the bell tower...very Tuscan atmosphere..called Gallo Nero..also recommended by the nice folks at Santa Caterina...Tuscan farmhouse decor..excellent food at about 30E's pp. with a very good wine selection.

Tico, if there's any country in the entire world where it's not necessary to blow your budget for the best in food, it sure as hell is Italy. The little mom and pops can match the big ticket places. more often than nopt!!Stu T.

A good restaurant...yes. A bargain...not really. With wine and tip it was more than 100 euros apiece. If you don't mind spending the money, I think the experience was worth it. The food was very good.
