The only Alpine experience I've had is in the Stubaital above Innsbruck. Beautiful scenery, walks of all degrees of strenuousness/comfort, Innsbruck itself is not uninteresting, and there are good value hotels in the valley:

But I'm not sure when/if they have a close season in the autumn to prepare for the winter ski-ing.

Hi,

I'm another one in love with Wengen as a destination. The peace and quiet that comes from being a car-free village, combined with the stunning views *over* to the mountains and down into the valley, make it a no-brainer winner for me.

If you like some rolling green countryside rather that steep steep peaks, I'd recommend Gstaad or the other nearby towns of Saanen, Rougemont, or Chateau d'Oex. These lie on the Golden Pass route between Interlaken and Montreux.

Have fun as you plan!

My favourites - Murren or Wengen or Stechelberg down the road from Lauterbrunnen

Zermatt & Saas Fee area of Matterhorn

Salzburg area - Berchtesgaden & south of Salzburg

I liked the Zakopane architecture & the surrounding area but not as much as the other three. It is not as dramatic, as previously stated
