Do you always carry your passport?

you'll find this is one of the topics that divides fodorites about down the middle 50/50.
I'm in the "always carry mine in a money belt" camp - but lots of people feel secure leaving it in a hotel safe.
Some (and I just don't get it) leave it in their luggage in the room.
You won't get concensus on this one . . . .

We always carry ours - and all our valuables. that way we know immediately if something happens to them (has not in probably close to 100 trips between beau and I).
If there's a problem better to find out right away - when you can more easily do something about it -rather than when you're getting ready to leave for the airport.

Never, ever. I've had my wallet stolen, but I never had to worry about the passport-it's a real hassle if you have to get it replaced, and will ruin your vacation. The passport goes into the safety box (if staying in a hotel-otherwise, somewhere safe in my apt.), as do all the other credit cards-just one credit card, my driver's license (as a photo ID) some cash, and that's it to go out and about.

Another vote for carrying passports with us - along with a copy of the first 2 pages in a separate place in my purse (as well as leaving that same information with someone back home). Yep, this is one of those 50/50 issues all right!

I carried ours through much of Italy. We stayed with a friend the last few days so I left the passports in our luggage during that time. Luckily, it was then that my purse got stolen out of the car at the top of Mount Subasio. I am eternally grateful that there were only 2 credit cards and my BlackBerry in it. This was a Sunday and we were scheduled to leave the next day. It would have been a nightmare had they been with me.

Some people seem to confuse 'carrying' as being in the luggage, purse, handbag, backpack, wallet or pocket. These are NOT acceptable options for securing your passport.
'Securing' means: room safe, hotel safe, pouch underneath clothing.
