My suggestion would be to really drill down on 'tourist French'. You cannot be conversational or anywhere close to it in only 4 months, but you could dramatically increase your vocabulary, learn the numbers, practice telling time, master a few phrases like "I'm sorry I don't speak French, do you speak English?", "My name is...", etc.

In my experience, I get hugely better results taking a non-credit adult class at the community college, then when I've tried to learn from tapes or books alone.

and no ;-) French people are not necesssaril multilingual.

Don't forget that the #1 tourist group in France will soon be the Chinese (the floodgates were opened 2 years ago by China), and they don't speak a word of French. The tourist industry is adapting as fast as possible, so things are written down in all of the major languages, even if the physical staff cannot communicate in the visitor's idiom.

The best advice we received last year before our tour through Provence and Cote d'Azur was: upon entering any establishment look at the person in the eyes, smile and say "bonjour monsieur/madame, Parlez-vous Anglais?" Almost every time, the person did speak enough for us to communicate. When they did not - we were able to use the few words we learned, point,'s just not difficult. The French people were lovely and accomodating. Stay relaxed and keep your phrase book with you. Trust me it's going to be obvious that you are a tourist and that you are eagerness to try to use their language as best as you can and they appreciate it.
