Do we need a Visa to drive from Italy into Croatia (via Trieste and Slovenia)?

Yes we have car rented with permission/ and insurance to drive in Slovenia and Croatia.

Hi jkheigle, are you perhaps thinking of the International Drivers Permit? You, under Italian law, should have that for driving in Italy. Perhaps Crotia law requires that as well? I really don't know..I only know about the requirement in Italy.

It is not a license. It is called an International Drivers Permit. Basically it is a tranlation of your drivers license. You can get one from an AAA office in a few minutes.

hi jkheigle, to obtain an International Drivers Permit for EACH peson that will be driving in Italy you can go to your local AAA office. The cost is $10.00 per person. You will need a passport type photo that AAA will take..I belive the cost of the photo is $10.00 per person also.

If you do not have an AAA office within driving distant of where you live you can apply for this via their website. You do NOT have to be a member of AAA to obtain the IDP.

The International Drivers Permit translates your US state drivers license into something like ten different languages. Keep in mind, you need to bring your US state drivers license as well as your International Drivers Permit with you for when your drive the rental car in Italy.

Normally the rental car agency will not even ask if you have this IDP, but if you get stopped by the Italian law enforcement authorities for any reason at all you could have a big fine if you cannot produce the IDP..so you sure want to obtain it IMO.

Again, regarding Crotia..I don't have a clue. I would go onto their government website to see what their legal requirements are..no doubt if you use Google you can access that.

Thanks for great information, confirming what I did eventually find on the AAA website -- But I did get side tracked by looking for International Driver' s licenses...

Oh boy, minimum $100 a pop, and process could take days. Nervous, I then looked up ol' faithful -- Triple A. I'll get my license on Monday. Easy. According to AAA, Slovenia and Croatia both accept IDP with valid US state license and passport.

I wonder how many end up spending what they don't need to...
