While I was living in Holland a few years ago I was told that more wooden shoes are sold to industry/garden workers then to tourists in Holland.

Only (some) farmers still wear wooden shoes. My estimate is that at least 100 times more wooden shoes are sold to tourists than to locals.

You will see old pictures of wooden shoes in France ( where there are only, about three left in the country who make them)Like Holland they are very seldom used and the majority are sold to tourists. We visited one in Brittany and we watched as he hand carved a design . These shoes are entirely made of wood and you wear a thick inner sock. I found them uncomfortable for my feet so I bought a smaller size to hang as remembrance. Some tourists buy the largest size to use as planters or serving vessels. The few locals that do use them for their gardening have them custom made to fit properly.

I bought a pair off the rack in Holland and wear them now and then. They are fairly comfortable and will keep your feet nice and warm. Wear them with a pair of heavy woolen socks.
