Padraig writes, "Europeans should be entitled to dress as Europeans when in Europe, and should not be subject to adverse comment."

Well, not directly to their face.

My friends and I will still, however, make discreet wretching noises behind their backs when we see people showing more skin than good taste or their physical condition allows.

I just hope that you don't expect us Europeans to retaliate and giggle at Americans in white tennis shoes.

I just hope that you don't expect us Europeans to retaliate and giggle at Americans in white tennis shoes.

Why would they? White tennis shoes seem to be quite popular in Europe.

"CW, I thought the French (Normans) conquered England, not the other way around."

I always sneak around that one on a technicality. The Normans were vassals of the King of France, not French, having only recently bowled up from Scandiwegia.

You will note that William the Bastard (Duke of Normandy) became King of England and not Philip the Fat (King of France).

I then go on to explain, in flawless French, how the English invented champagne

And thanks to the Old Bastard the Queen is Duke of Normandy.

I'm decended from these people (Normans) and there's no way that they are French. I drink beer, not wine, can't dress myself for toffee, like sticky puddings and heavy metal and am quite handy in a pagga.

These are viking genes - not mamby-pamby french genes.

Funny resurrection of an old post. I suppose that the mods removed some ridiculous spam just above.

Anyway, for the others who have clicked on this ridiculous subject, without reading any of the posts above, I will say that I see hundreds of baseball caps in Paris, so who cares? Many of them are on older American male tourists, but lots of others are on suburban banlieue boys. Who gives a sh*t? Last summer I saw a completely naked man on the metro and none of us batted an eye. (And I didn't even notice anyone getting out their mobile phones to immortalize the event.)

There are a few post that joke about berets and one positive one. I like good quality berets - they are the most practical hats one can get for travel in cooler weather. They are warm, the good ones are water repellent, they can easily be stashed in a jacket pocket, and I think they are a nice look and do not care what others think. But, stay away from the ones in the souvenir shops which are trash and look it. I was in NYC a few weeks ago and wore one of mine. It went well with my old London Fog trench coat.

Since Donald Trump started wearing those baseball caps with his slogan on it everyone in Europe these days is wearing them too, in adulation of Trump.
