Or if you followed the fashion advice here, you'd be the only college aged girl dressed head to foot in an outfit from Chico's.

I think the women are a bit older on this site so it's similar to asking your mom or grandmother for fashion advice.

A typo occurs when you transpose letters; that was not a typo. And you "ease up" about the polyester pants criticism -- it is the slick 20somethings who clamor for the poly bootcuts/tighty tops.

Yes, thank you lawchick. I did realize my mistake as soon as I clicked the post button. As for my writing capabilities, I passed my history Capstone with an A.

fishee you made me laugh, chicos indeed. I see that advice all the time here and to picture that line on a young girl is amusing.

Thanks for all the tips. I will wear what I like and proudly. My Bf mocks me because of how I always want to look cute while traveling. But I can't help but want to look cute anyway. I am a girl after all.

Strange title of this thread. Do Italian women where cargo pant? How odd.

margotvalois, if you are cute, dress in the cargos, they probably look good on you and you cannot look like a bumpkin. A young cute girl can get away with a lot, people look at how good you look in the clothes instead of what the clothes are. They may even want to imitate your fashion sense, yes, be yourself over all.

Have fun, hope you didn't mind the teasing.

Hi M,

>I have no desire to look like an american bumpkin. <

Whether you desire it or not, you will.

You might as well wear whatever you want.

>trip for a college travel writing course. <
American is a proper noun and is capitalized.

I'm curious of those who aren't American. When you come here to visit (to the US), do you think about what you are wearing to fit in? I know a lot of British tourists don't (too many men in knee-high socks with shorts!) I can often tell tourists, but it doesn't bother me one way or the other.

Amending that - there are some outfits that make me cringe, but overall - I don't really think that much about clothes one way or the other.

I never think about what to wear on vacation. Always just pack what I have and ALWAYS get taken for a local from Italy to Spain to France and beyond. Can't tell you how many fellow Americans have pulled out their phrase books to ask me something in the local language. It's all about how you carry yourself, whether you feel comfortable where you are. Upcoming trip to Morocco is the only one I will be careful what I pack so not to offend in an islamic country. And I am sorry but ALOT of the fashion advice on this board is a bit dated, even for someone 40.

In the past couple of years my husband and I have gone to Rome and Florence a few times and one thing I noticed (the most recent being Rome last Christmas) was that everyone, EVERYONE, in Rome wears black. So if you have black cargo pants, you're all set.

Hi Margo,

You didn't say what part of Italy and I think that is a factor to consider. Small towns are far more casual than the cities.

If you'll be backpacking in the hills of Tuscany or Cinque Terre with other college students lightweight cargo pants could be appropriate. Jeans might be too hot for daytime hikes in May but okay for evenings.

I think the best source for advice would be someone who has taken the course or the trip leader.

Sorry, I can't picture black slacks on a backpacking college student in May.

It sounds like an interesting and fun venture so go, have a good time and focus on your writing.

Margotvalois, I an not American and shall try to answer your question without poking fun at the bad spelling and all the jokes at your expense (shame on you Fodorites!). In general, you can wear your capris or cargo pants (though those are rather old-fashioned in Europe) but bear in mind that although fashion is universal and Vogue US features the same as Vogue Italy, in Europe people wear clothes that are tailored (so, neither tight not loose). Please leave your white sneakers at home. If you adopt the american preppy style you will fit in Italy and generally in Europe. Easy!

Anoukaimee,

I'm glad you mentioned some of the mean posts here.

I was beginning to wonder if Ann Coulter or Cruella de Ville was posting on Fodor's.

One thing I did notice all over Europe (unfortunately) is everybody was wearing jeans and jeans and more jeans. Expecting to see elegance in Paris (and I did not) it was disappointing. It looked like America...maybe worse. But then again, another thing I noticed was that the much younger population in Europe, especially Paris. The majority of people definitely were 30's and under, which I found interesting in comparison to our American aging population.

BTW, did I capitalize American properly (sarcasm off)

Honey, wear your jeans and/or your cargo pants and you'll fit right in.

"I have no desire to look like an american bumpkin."

My husband looks like the typical American bumpkin. On his last trip to Italy, he wore blue jeans, Nike shoes, polo shirt, and a cheap polyester wind breaker from Sports Authority.

Without fail, every waiter, train worker, museum clerk, etc, approached him and spoke French. Only after he told them he's American did they switch to English. (He later joked that he single-handedly lowered the reputation of French men throughout Italy).

So my point is, just because you don't look Italian, it doesn't mean you'll automatically get pegged the dreaded "American." Don't worry about it so much.

Mahya, jeans are fine as long as they fit you to a tee and are dark. They can be very elegant. Team them up with a silk satin shirt and heels and you can walk into the Ritz. The key is to "dress your jeans up" with silk, leather, cashmere and the best bags and shoes.
