Yesterday, the French news had a big report on Birkenstock, one of the last items of footwear still made in Europe and which has become fashionable again in spite of the high price. They did not mention whether the workers received tips for making them.

Whatgood-bye?

Their salary does not depend on the number of meals they serve or the manner in which they serve it>

Which sometimes results in surly or perfunctory service - fine with me - all this groveling for tips at times in American restaurants gets kind of grating - do your job as a professional whether you have a smile on or not who cares?

this Paris restaurant is going to encourage it by not informing its English-speaking customers of the French law regarding “Servis Compris.”>

May have missed it above but is it a law? Cannot a restaurant charge for service - like some in Venice charge for getting a table?

I have zero truck with "self-growth books."I do my own self-growing.

And why would I not defend my enjoyment of knowing kerouac, fuzzbucket, whathello , and other Fodorites who live in France?

You should be so lucky. It's all part of "self-growing,"y'know. How are things going in the USA today?

And "service compris" is pretty much self-explanatory, but so is finding your way into a Paris métro station, so it just might be that YOU have the problem.

Yes those that throw sticks should not complain when some are thrown back at them - same as with glasshouses.

Those four Fodorgarch mentioned in above post are some of the very best resources about France and Europe in general we have. I cherish their presence - and at times rude IMO (and me to them) but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater -rudeness is often provoked by rudeness - you seem not to be able to look yourself in the mirror when accusing others of things that could be said about you.

That said I welcome your contributions as well - from a naive American traveler standpoint and your foibles will help other novice naive perhaps Americans avoid the pitfalls you've encountered - perhaps enabling them to find their way also out of the abyss of the metro.

I think by law perhaps all restaurant receipts must have all charges on them - you should have seen the "Service 15%" or whatever on it.

Meant to delete that before posting as you explained that above.

Now do we have to tip the Toilet women (or men) attendants at public toilets -they always have a tip box out - talking about free ones not ones that list charges?

StCirq, your treatment of me on this thread is very disappointing. I once thanked you with sincerity for your help on the Dordogne, but recently, your blunt rudeness and insensitivity confounds me. You are clearly not the person I once thought you were.

I think I read you were happy with your move back to France. You don't sound happy on this board. In fact, you sound as miserable ever, with lots of digs and insults to strangers, just like your troll friends. That doesn't sound like happiness to me. People who are happy don't play the troll game. They don't thrive on being rude to others. I'm no longer buying your fake facade.

For what your off-topic comments are worth, I didn't vote for Trump. But I see you enjoy a good cheap shot when you can get one in. I'm sure you're very proud of yourself. I'm sure it makes you feel more superior than you already feel.

troll - love that word - used by trolls usually - but the definition seems to fit you:

In Internet slang, a troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting quarrels or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community with the intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal, on-topic discussion,[3] often for the troll's amusement.

Not sure who threw the first stones here but who will be the adult who stops throwing? You?

NIce to meet you Belinda . I come here to read your advice re Paris. You know how to enjoy the city.

I do wonder why, if they're concerned about their brand, the owners don't open the Lounge and close Europe.

It's a 3* (French official rating) hotel in the Latin Quarter, if that makes a difference. We'll be staying 10 nights, by the way, so that may affect the answers.>

Why would the rating of the hotel make a difference? Even one-star hotels change linen and those staffers I'd bet get even lower wages than at a ***-hotel -maybe you should thus give more to the lower rated the hotel staff? And to hotels not patronized by many Americans?

Gosh, Vincenzo, I have just returned from Cesly Krumlov which gets many visitors from Germany and Austria.

Czech people dress nicely in general, but I have to say that those Germans and Austrians are some of the most horribly dressed tourists I have ever seen.
