Do I need an overnight in Delphi?
 

I will be Athens next week with 2 teenage boys. We will have 3 days there. Does anyone know how long the ride is to Delphi? Should I do a day tour? Or is there a better way to get there, ie. train? I have booked a hotel in Athens for 3 nights, but perhaps I could change the reservation.<BR>Any advisors out there?

I took a day trip to Delphi. You could do an overnight but you can pretty much see in on a day trip.<BR>

One day is enough. It is years since I was there, and we drove from Athens. It was not a long drive (I don´t think the train goes there, but I am not sure). 3 days is fine for Athens, and perhaps you might go further north from Delphoi, to the villages in the mountainous area.

I was in Delphi for 2 nights in '98. I couldn't imagine just doing a day trip because there is so much to see. You can spend two hours in the museum alone. (Please see the One Armed Charioteer.) Mount Parnassus, the Oracle of Delphi, the Ampitheatre, and other ruins should all be on your itin.<BR><BR>There is no train to Delphi that I know of. The town is tiny and I saw no station. Delphi is also high up in the mountains and I doubt a train would go there.<BR><BR>I would stay overnight, Karyn.

I stayed 2 nights and that was a bit too much. <BR><BR>If you can arrive at Delfi EARLY the first day, then one night would be fine.<BR><BR>I think a day tour would be too rushed and you'd collide with all the other tourist hordes. Delfi is lovely and magical in the early morning and late afernoon, when the daytrippers have left.<BR><BR>Nearby town of Arachova rates an interesting diversion, perhaps for dinner and an evening stroll. <BR><BR>

1/delphi can be done as a day trip from Athens with a rented car or a guided visit with a tour operator(a good idea if you want to do it in a more relaxing way).<BR>a more expensive way,but still reasonnable for Us standards is to hire for the day a 'private taxi('usually a mercedes)<BR>there is no train going up there.<BR><BR>a lunch in Arachova on your way back to athens is then an excellent idea.<BR><BR>2/ if you want to spend a night,arachova( a mountain village wich turns to a ski resort in winter) is an option,...however in summer, with teens i would prefer to drive(1 hour scenic drive) to the sea village of Galaxidi.<BR>a picturesque village with excellent lodging/restaurants/nightlife for the teens.<BR>the best combination: culture/discovery/ and... relax<BR>in any case leave athens early in the morning,around 8 am in order to reach delphi around 11.you will enjoy the archeol.site before the heat rises.

I took a day trip to Delphi several years ago from Athens and wished I had spent a night there. If you like archeological sights then a few hours will not be enough. There's quite a lot to see and it's beautiful. Two nights might be pushing it but I'll defer to those who stayed that long. We took a bus tour from Athens that we booked through the hotel but I can't remember the name of the tour company. The ride to Delphi is about three hours from what I recall so a day trip will be spent mostly on a bus or in a car.

We stayed at the Apollo Hotel and it was charming.<BR><BR>I would also recommend going to Arahova, which is a traditional Greek village. It's also a great place to shop! We went to Delphi for a day last november and would say that one long day is fine. We used George Kokkotos taxi service which made things go quite easily. Tel 9637.030. His rates were quite reasonable for a family.

Does anyone know about how much a day trip on a bus to Delphi would cost for 2 people? I will be there in 2 weeks and I'm just wondering how it compares to hiring a private car and driver. Thanks.

We drove from Athens and spent the night. One night is perfect. It is lovely in the morning.

I just was quoted 280 euro for two people with "George" the famous taxi driver. I will rent a car and take my chances. I think that is too much . If there were 4 of us it would be ok..<BR>I would love the here opinions/ideas??

With the advertising and shilling "George" gets on Matt Barrett's Greece website, apparently George thinks he can charge sky-high prices to the dumb yankees.<BR><BR>if you rent a car, it may be too difficult for a 1-day trip to Delfi, unless you're already an experienced Athens/Greek driver.<BR><BR>But as part of a multi-day car tour, then it it's perfectly feasible and gives you more independence. Carry good detailed maps, and have the passenger act as navigator. I would have been overwhelmed, had not my son been the navigator.
