Do I need a permit to travel by train from Kazakhstan to Russian Urals?

Hello,
I plan on traveling from Almaty or Aktau to Ufa, Russia by train.
I wondered if I need a special permit?
If so how far in advance should I get it?
Also, is it safe to travel in Russia at this time? In terms of being harassed by security as well as the general populace?

Thanks

I'd check with their embassies in your country.

While S Korea is not part of NATO it is seen as part of the West, I have no information on the situation on that border but it would seem unwise to me in Europe

Thanks for your reply and concern. I did think it unsafe to travel to Russia. I guess I just needed someone else to second that. I think it best not to go. Thanks.

You apparently don't need a visa. However, I don't believe that route is currently possible (and certainly not desirable).

Seat61.com says on the Russia page: "All international trains to/from Moscow & Russia remain suspended until further notice, originally due to covid-19 and now due to sanctions and the war in Ukraine." On the Kazakhstan page it says:"Trains to Russia were suspended due to Covid-19 and remain suspended due to sanctions."

I believe a number of people have been/are trying to travel in the other direction....
