Do I need a car in the Greek Islands?

I will be in the greek islands (Mykonos, Santorini and Crete) for my honeymoon first two weeks of June. Do I need to rent a car? If I do any suggestions on which rental company?

I can't speak for Mykonos, I haven't been there. Santorini is a relatively small island (around 15 miles from end to end), if you're based in Fira, that is the hub of the bus service and you could easily get away without hiring a car. Saying that, we hired a car there for 3 days which was ample to tour the island at our own pace and explore all the corners of the island.

Crete is a large island and you would definitely benefit from hiring a car there to explore some of the fantastic scenery, ruins, etc - you won't have time to see it all. You'll find plenty of local car hire companies when you get there, if you do want to hire one.

I have been to Mykonos and Santorini and you probably don't need a car for those. I haven't been to Crete but judging by it's size, I agree with Maria that a car would be good.

No matter where you stay in Crete, a car is necessary if you wish to see all the island has to offer. From memory it is about a 2 hour drive from the eastern side of the island across to Chania (a must visit) in the west.

I can't see how you can survive on Crete without a car.

I can't really see the point of one on Mykonos or Santorini. Buses are two-thirds of the fun.

One more chiming in: Renting a car on Crete will give you an entirely different experience. You don't need one on the other islands.

We found it very easy to rent a car on Crete and the agency was extremely accommodating. We wanted to drop the car at the airport, and they sent someone from their office in Plakias to meet us and get the car -- no extra charge.

We spent a week on Crete and rented a car for the full time. We were glad we did, as we really enjoyed driving around the entire island.

We spent only a few days each in Myknonos and Santorini, and ended up renting a car for one day on each. We found that to really get out and "explore" the island at will, public transporation just wasn't working, as busses were too far and few between -- we couldn't go to five or six spots in one day that way.

I'm heading to Crete as well for 3 or 4 days. This post has been very helpful. Am I understanding the previous posts corretly in that it isn't necessary (either from a cost or availability standpoint) to pre-book a rental car for Crete?

Have been to all three islands and Crete last year. Agree with others you would not need a car for Mykonos or Santorini although for the later hiring a motor scooter for a day or so is fun. In Crete we rented a car from Hertz in Chania(got a good deal). Depending on where you stay you might not need a car for your whole stay. Well worth taking some trips into the mountains where there is some spectacular scenary and interesting villages. In terms of places to stay I can recommend Chania, Reythmenon and Agios Nichlaos - although have not been to the latter for a bout 20 years and might be a bit more commercialised than it used to be.
