Do Dutch Folk Wear "Do Not Euthanize" Bracelets?

A question for folks traveling in Holland and for Dutch folk - Rick Santorum, leading candidate for the Republican Party nomination for President says 'that Dutch people wear 'Do Not Euthanize' bracelets' - meaning of course that the Dutch are worried that if they get ill and have to be hospitalized they will not then be routinely euthanized as he also charges - saying the Dutch euthanize older folk routinely regardless of condition just to save taxpayer moneys.

Q - Has anyone traveling in Holland or Dutch residents ever seen a "Do Not Euthanize" bracelet.

Q - If you go to Holland will you or should we wear "Do Not Euthanize" bracelets for our protection?

Where can I buy such a bracelet? At Schiphol Airport shops on arrival>

I want to be covered from the get-go.

Dank u very wel!

Tot Ziens!

Totally ridiculous; I cannot believe that they have candidates who utter this kind of rubbish. There is absolutely no truth in this.

Makes you wonder how much to believe of anything else this guy says.

I'm assuming PQ knows the answer perfectly well, but if anyone wants to know, here's what the Dutch government has to say (it's a PDF file):

Patrick's link shows what a liar Rick Santorum is and will be to further his and his ilk's religious zealotry and bigotry.

PalenQ Feb 26th, 2012 08:44 AM

Patrick - I am still going to wear a "DO NOT EUTHANIZE" bracelet next trip to Holland - given that I am over 60 years old. thanks for the link.

The_lonely_traveler Feb 27th, 2012 03:58 AM

Ridiculous and utterly nonsense.

bilboburgler Feb 27th, 2012 04:03 AM

And in Switzerland they have the same badge.

While the French have no word for entrepreneur (I so don't miss Bush Junior).

Still at least he didn't burn someone else's holy book (out of interest how many people do you know who ever burnt any sort of book?)

Never no for sure. Anyway recently distributing to the public. Check this: www.dutchbracelet.com (Mmmh?)

Dank u very wel Snoeshaan! - Great satire. And the Washington Post article I copied and pasted from that site shows how Rick was simply telling lies with his shocking statistics of how rampant euthanasia is in Holland - even involuntary euthanasia.

thanks for that link!

PalenQ Mar 10th, 2012 06:09 AM

Once again folks anyone traveling to Holland needs - ABSOLUTELY needs a do not euthanize bracelet - your life could depend on it!

Kiddo Mar 10th, 2012 06:57 AM

My husband travels routinely to The Netherlands on business. I'd better warn him....lol.

slaol121 Mar 13th, 2012 09:48 PM

I'm not sure about the bracelets, but an article in the 1999 Journal of Medical Ethics confirmed that involuntary euthanasia happens in the Netherlands.

1999 - it is now 2012 - read the Dutch government guidelines about euthanasia in practice.

>>an article in the 1999 Journal of Medical Ethics confirmed that involuntary euthanasia happens in the Netherlands<<

It probably happens more widely in more countries than we'll ever know: and not necessarily from malign or merely utilitarian intentions.

British-Dutch essayist and journalist Ian Buruma usually gets up my nose. His views on immigration and multiculturalism are not mine. But he's onto a droll paradox in this article.

He argues that Rick Santorum and the populist propandists of the US right (like their left-wing counterparts) are really the love-children of '90s academic post-modernists, since they subordinate facts to "truthiness" for political ends.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...rticle2364593/

‎"The public is increasingly segmented into groups of like-minded people who see their views echoed back to them in blogs, comments and tweets. There’s no need to be exposed to different opinions, which are, in any case, considered to be propaganda."

Bang on and so tragically true of the USA in 2012!

basingstoke2 Mar 14th, 2012 07:07 AM

In Holland it is not necessary, but in Utah I wear a "Do not convert me if found dead" bracelet

The_lonely_traveler Mar 15th, 2012 01:48 AM

Haha, that's funny basingstoke2!

I thought about requesting info on a bullet-proof vest when coming to the US :-D

>>>I cannot believe that they have candidates who utter this kind of rubbish<<<

You had better believe it! And they utter worse than this.
Hard to believe such things go on in a western democracy in the 21st century but they certainly do.

How about Herman Cain, who has left the race but was a 'real' candidate at one time... he got his tax plan from a video game and quoted the Pokemon movie! Santorum thinks birth control is 'wrong' (maybe he's confused and thinks he's running for pope!) and Romney, as basingstoke2 has pointed out, baptizes dead people and thinks he'll get his own planet to rule over after his own death.

So yes, they certainly utter an amazing amount of rubbish. What's even more amazing is how many people actually go along with it.

Some carry a card, so its not a bracelet

"In 1990, the Dutch Patients’ Association, a disability rights organization, developed wallet-size cards which state that if the signer is admitted to a hospital “no treatment be administered with the intention to terminate life.” Many in Holland see the card as a necessity to help prevent involuntary euthanasia being performed on those who do not want their lives ended, especially those whose lives are considered low in quality. Whenever I travel in Europe I carry all of my "Do Not..." bracelets. These include "Do Not Feed Me Pate", "Do Not Steal My Bright White Sneakers", "Do Not Give Me Inexpensive Health Care", and of course "Do Not Kill Me Unless I Am Enjoying RyanAir".

Now that I know the real truth thanks to Santorum and his compatriots, I find it appalling at night that the wagons come rattling around European cities with the cart puller yelling "Bring out your dead". And wow, if you sneeze more than twice in a row, BAM, the infamous Dutch Kill Team is right on you.

:-)
