Do Canadians need Visa to work in UK?

Hi, I am planning to go to the Uk in May- I have purchased my return ticket but if I plan on staying and finding a job my questions are: 1) do I have to have a return ticket to show them I plan to go home at some point 2) do I need a VISA to work in UK?

You don't just need a visa; you need a wok permit; and depending on your immigration status it might be very hard to get. If you're coming in on a visitor visa, you won't get a work permit. They are very iffy about people changing their immigration status once they are here. If you want e-mail details to me at my office and I'll check n one of the texts what your chances are. <BR>[email protected]

Beth, you should check out to see if any of your parents/grandparents were born in the UK. My father is English and I have been able to get a European passport because of this. It's known as "patriality". It gives one the right of residence and also to be able to work in the UK.

As a Commonwealth person, you don't need to claim patriality. And you can get a work permit, so long as its incidental to your holiday and you apply for it before you come here. Maximum term 2 years.

I would recommend claiming patriality if you are able to. The work permit is only for those between the ages of 18 and 27 and is a once only permit. If you are eligible for a British (European Union) passport you can claim residency and work anywhere in Europe with no restrictions on your age.
