Dear Mr Snowdon, <BR><BR>Many ATMs in Europe accept any reasonable card, but a few accept only cards linked to MasterCard, and a few accept only cards linked to Visa. No country has only one sort.<BR><BR>Detail is on net:<BR><BR>Visa and Visa Plus: Information on ATM outlets country by country <BR>http://www.visa.com/globalgateway/gg_selectcountryf.html?selectcountry=1<BR>or http://www.visa.com/globalgateway/gg_selectcountryf.html?retcountry=1<BR><BR>MasterC ard and Cirrus: http://mastercard.com/cardholderservices/atm/index.html<BR><BR>Welcome to Europe.<BR><BR>Ben Haines, London

<BR>Dear Ben: good answer. To top it up, I'd like to add that the list you get from e.g. MC is not even exhaustive. Banks in Europe may have branches in smaller villages, with an ATM, who're not listed but still accept the card. Just checked: my village is not on the list, but I used my American ATM card there today.

I've been all around W/C and E Europe - UK, France, Greece, Italy, Austria, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic. I have never been stuck anywhere for cash because my ATM card didn't work - individual machines might not take it but it was never hard to find another one that did.

The ATM in Iceland don't accept cards linked with Plus system.

The back of your card should tell you what systems your card is good on. The two main international ones are Plus and Cirrus. For example my card says that it is good at Interlink, Plus and Pulse.
