DLR? Oyster and be done?
Hi all, Preface this by saying I've read at least 10 threads concerning the oyster card. Is one able to purchase a PAYG Oyster from term 5 out of LHR? As well, what is DLR (mode of transport)? I got it; travelcards only purchased from rail stations (no benefit if solo traveler here, eh?) I think the new rules after 11Jan09 state off-peak for osyter are from 0930-1600. So max daily would be 5.10GBP daily? thanks so much. Will be there 22Mar

I can help with few:
Yes, you can buy an Oyster PAYG at Heathrow...you need to go the Underground station there. DLR = Docklands Light Railway, overground rail that links up to the tube at Bank. |
If you're a solo traveler, the easiest is to get Oyster PAYG, which you can get at the Heathrow T5 tube station. The daily capping price using Oyster PAYG will always be 50 pence cheaper than what you pay for a one-day travelcard.
If you're staying in London for 6-7 days, then you will be better off getting a 7-day travelcard loaded onto the Oyster, instead of PAYG. |
"<i>If you're staying in London for 6-7 days . . . .</i>" Or even 5 full days
|
I agree with Janis, I use the bus and tube a lot and even a 4 day stay pays for the travel card

I think that's not correct, mathematically-speaking, at least for off-peak travel. A 7-day travel card (loaded on an Oyster) is I think 25 pounds and change. The max off-peak price you would pay for <b>four</b> days using Pay as You Go is 20.40 pounds, and the max peak you would pay for four days using PAYG is about 25 pounds (the latter being a wash). |
Thank you loads, everyone...
this I found extremely helpful, and truly answered each and every query I had. I love the technical folk, because I'm wired exactly the same way... got a great, authentic chuckle out of the mathematical, calculator-clickin message. Again, many many thx... now... if only one can recommend to me great fare in the bloomsbury area... no frills, just great prices and non gastroenteritis-inducing food....=) |
