distance to vic station
How far is it to Victoria station by tube from

Nottinghill
Paddington
Earl's Court

Am I correct in guessing hotels may be a bit cheaper in these areas?

If you go to http://www.thetube.com/
there's a route planner. It will give you detailed instructions with distances, timings and fares.

As I understand your question, you think Paddington, Earls Court or Notting Hill might have cheaper accomodations than Victoria.

Well, that is not the case - Victoria probably has the best selection of safe, inexpensive B&Bs in central London. There are also a lot in Earls Court. The Paddington area is too "iffy", and Notting Hill is becoming more trendy that cheap.

So don't worry about the distances from Victoria - just look for a place there.

If I remember I believe Nottinghill and Paddington are both similar in about 15-20 mins to Victoria, Earls Court is about 5 min. Hotels definitely can be cheaper. I agree with Janis about Notting Hill, but disagree to some extent about the other statements.

Yes Victoria has some good B&B's, but there are also some bad ones in the area. A B&B may also not be what Paul is looking for, since you may be talking a shared bath room, etc. Hotels as opposed to B&B's in Victoria area are quite expensive and there aren't many good values there.

Paddington does have some stinker hotels, but only a few blocks closer to Lancs Gate has some reasonable ones within walking distance to Paddington. I would also look into the area just south of Hyde Park instead of north of it. Many good inexpensive hotels in the Kennsington area or may be Marble Arch.

Thanks for the good advice.
the tube website is a gem.

I am looking for a B&B style and yes we are looking on the budget side.
I don't mind the shared bathroom idea providing these tend to be somewhat clean.
I noticed around Vic station they go for about 40pounds.
Any leads on good ones?

thanks for advice so far

Paul

Paul,
We are looking at small hotels or B&Bs
in the Victoria station area as well.
We are considering the Victoria Inn.
A little more money, 60 pounds approx.
if you book online.
But, we are also considering a Frommers
pick...the Oak House Hotel on Hugh St.
a few minutes south of Victoria station.
Its supposed to be a small establishment
with very clean presentable rooms.
However, I can't find ANY references on
this one, anywhere on the Fodor threads?
Its 40 to 45 pounds per night. Anyone have info on this one???
Tom
