Distance in Rome
 

How far (distance wise) is it from the Colosseum area to the Campo de' Fiori/Piazza Navone area? I'm having trouble finding the right apartment for 5 of us. I had found the perfect apartment/price/location and of course it's unavailable for the time that we need. I want to be close to the Campo de'Fiori area but I've found apartments in the Colosseum area to be cheaper. My young adult children will be out walking at night to restaurants/bars so it needs to be a safe area.

Go for Campo dei Fiori, although because it is a magnet for touring college kids who do binge drinking, it does attract people looking to prey on the inebriated. So long as your young adults are aware of that, they'll do fine in that neighborhood.

I like to use www.maps.google.com for driving and walking directions.

It's over a mile from the Colosseum itself to Campo de Fiori - not a convenient distance if you want to be out and about.

Make sure you include the Pantheon in your search for apartments.

I'm not sure I understand the above post, but the young adults are more likely to be checking out the nightlife nearer the Campo dei Fiore (if not the Campo itself) than they are the nightlife around the Colosseum.

It's really not about mileage between monuments. It's about which are the safest parts of town at night. Most of central Rome is really very safe. I wouldn't think twice, as a woman, to walk alone in most of Roma between the Tiber and Piazza del Popolo until 2am.

I would think twice in Trastevere, around Termini, the Colosseo and around the large public parks.

Tourists of all ages in Roma should always have taxi money on them if they suddenly find themselves lost and feeling insecure. Step into a bar and ask for help in obtaining a taxi -- but in general, if you are sober in central Roma, you are not likely to be a target of anything. If you aren't sober, get in a cab.

I would agree that you want to find a place in the historic center of Rome. This would include the Campo de Fiore, the Pantheon, the Piazza Navona and even the Spanish Steps area. All of these are within easy walking distance of each other mostly in a car free zone. The Colosseum is easy to walk to for the day you want to take that trip, but I wouldn't want to stay in this area, particularly for night life.
