Distance from Rome to Siena via the train.

Hi, Heading to Italy next Friday and want to know how far the train ride is from Rome to Siena? Anyone know of any great places to eat in Lazio or Southern Tuscany? We have Luca Garrapa booked for two days and are trying to make something work out.
Thanks.

Depending on your route and whether you take the ES or the IT, between 3 & 4 hours.

Check out trenitalia.com & type in your info, it gives you all your options.

Hi Mama,

There is bus service from Rome to Siena that is more convenient than the train, since your luggage goes into the bus compartment. It's about 2:45 hr.

See http://www.senabus.it/

I agree with Ira. I took this bus both ways between Rome and Siena, it is much quicker, and much cheaper than the train.
You can book online (I got a special offer deal of €8 going. The return journey was €17). You need to book for a specific time (buses leave about every 2 hours) but I asked them what would happen if my plane was delayed, and they said I could transfer the ticket to the next bus for €3 "administration fee".

If arriving at Fiumicino , take the train to Roma Tiburtina (€5). The bus station is two minutes walk from the railway station.

The other advantage of the bus, is that arrives at Piazza Gramsci, near the city centre. The train station is about a mile or so away - all of it uphill.

This is great information, thanks for sharing. Have a couple of questions about the bus:

Does the bus from Siena to Rome have stops?

If there are stops, could someone else take your luggage out of the luggage compartment without you knowing it?

Are the buses air conditioned?

The bus trips I was on only stopped twice - both time on the outskirts of Siena itself (once at the station). The bus driver supervised the unloading of the luggage. I suppose theft is not impossible , but is unlikely.

I am not 100% certain about A/C, but it was a modern comfortable coach, and I am almost sure it was airconditioned. The trip up to Siena was made in temperatures around 3 degrees Celcius, so cold would be a problem. I don't remmber ever beig uncomfortable on either trip.
