Distance and time from the Crete airport to Crete Seaport?

My family and I are traveling to Crete June 22 to June 27th and intend to rent a car during that time period. But we will be leaving Crete or Santorini via one of the ferries. We'd be returning the car to the airport rental company, but the ferries leave relatively early in the day. I'm concerned about the time and distance between the airport and seaport. Are they close to each other? Should I expect to use a cab and if so, how much time should I allow myself for the travel between the two locations? Any other tips on using the car rentals and ferries would also be appreciated.

The port and the airport are not far away from each other, i would calculate 20 min maximum.

You can take a taxi from the airport the port ( which is near the central square of Heraklio).
There will be many taxis at the airport, getting by taxi to the port is very easy.

Why don't you return the car at the port? have you tried asking for that?

Crete doesn't have just one port and one airport... there are actually 3 airports and many ports.. but since you will be departing to Santorini, i assume you are talking about Heraklio.

The airport is just a few miles from the seaport, no more than 15 minutes by taxi.

Look at this map: http://tinyurl.com/cd3vfmv

The airport is just east of the seaport. Use the zoom function to get a closeup.

Thanks to both of you, clausar and brotherleelove2004!

I was hoping to return the car to the airport because I assume it would be cheaper that way. But you just made me think... would it cost me more for the cab ride from the airport to the seaport than it would to leave the car at the seaport?

I should have said we are arriving at the Nikos Kazantzakis airport at Heraklio and departing from the seaport at Heraklio also.

That's assuming you are talking about Heraklion Airport and not Chania.

If you give back the car at the port you won't be paying for the taxi.
The car rental company should not charge you anything for dropping off the car at the port, since this is a very central spot.
Ask them
