I heard colleagues discuss a one day pass for less tahn 30 euros which would take 2 people from Salzburg to Munich.
I have a rail pass for Austria only and will be travelling Vienna to Munich.
1. Can I buy this one day pass for 2 in advance so I have it when I change trains in Salzburg?
2. Is it valid on all trains Salzburg to Munich?
3. What is a website or source for schedule of applicable trains and place to purchase this pass?
My jouney is May 26,2004.
Sorry to be vague about the pass. It sounds like a great bargain, but I don't recall what it's called.

I think what you are talking about is a train ticket, not a "pass". A rail pass allows you to make unlimited journeys in a specified area, whereas a ticket allows to travel along a specific stretch of railway line. If you have a rail pass for Austria and want to make one journey to München ("Munich&quot, then you need to buy a ticket from the Austrian border to München (you don't need to alight at the border or even to catch a train which stops there - the ticket frontier probably isn't at a station). When you buy the ticket in Austria, show your rail pass and ask for a ticket from the border to München. You can check schedules on www.bahn.de.

In my experience Geoff is probably correct. The "border" between Germany and Austria is right at Salzburg although you won't encounter any "border checks" between these two countries I suspect.
You simply need as discounted a ticket between these two cities as you can get once you get there...the journey itself takes about 1.5 hours.

I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but if I remember correctly from other postings here, The Bayern Pass is good for travel within the Bayern region of Germany,including Salzburg, from Monday to Friday, 9am to 3 am the following day, for up to 5 people 2nd class, for E22.00. There is also a pass for the weekend. Check the following website for more information.

To expand on what I wrote above, if you have an Austrian rail pass, that will cover a train journey up to the border. Show the pass and ask for a ticket from the border to München. Train fares in most European countries are calculated from the distance in kilometres, and you have already paid for any journey in Austria, so all you will need is a ticket from the border to München.

Come to think of it, the Bayern Pass might not work for you since it is only good on specific trains, such as IRE, RB, RE, and S-Bahn. I believe most of the trains running from Munich to Salzburg are ICE and EC. You can check the www.bahn.de website and do a point-to-point query to see which type of trains would run. If it doesn't fit your plans, point-to-point tickets would be the only other way to go.

There is a ticket for travel within Bavaria and to select Austrian border municipalities (Salzburg and Kufstein are examples)thatis cheaper than the normal cost per kilometer. I recall that the ticket is called a Bayernkarte but of that I am nost unsure.

The idea is that you buy a cheaper ticket and go via local trains. There are restrictions as you can imagine. The trains on which the ticket is valid are usually local trains that make many stops. For example, I went to Salzburg with one, and our route was liesurely and pleasant. It is not a bad deal.

I was surprised to learn that the ticket to Salzburg from Munich was DB all the way there and back. There is even a DB ticket window in the Salzburg train station that is separate from the Austrian rail system.

The Deutsche Bahn revamped its ticketing system yet again this past year, so I am having trouble keeping up with it. But, I don't think the 'Bayern Ticket' (monday-friday) and 'Schöneswochende (weekend) ticket' have changed. These are the tickets you are referring to, Pilgrim.

The concept for both tickets is the same: up to five adults (or up to two adults and as many children you have) get to ride on the 'slow' trains (RB & RE), as well as S-bahn and U-Bahn.

We have used these tickets on many occasions to go from Munich to Rothenberg, Salzburg, Regensburg, Füssen, Oberammergau, etc.

Yes, you can by them in advance. Just tell the ticket window person which day you want.

There are two important differences between the weekday and the weekend tickets.
1) weekend ticket is a few dollars more
2) weekday ticket can only be used after 9 a.m., whereas the weekend ticket can be used as early as you like. Consequently, this makes travel difficult on weekdays.

RE trains run between Munich and Salzburg direct about every 2 hours. Travel time is about 1 hour 55 minutes.

You can now get the "Bayern Ticket" - a daypass for travel good for up to 5 people on the regional (RE, RB) trains - on any day of the week for 22 Euros. It's good after 9 am on weekdays, any time on weekends. It can be purchased in Salzburg or within Germany; I doubt you can get it before you get to Salzburg unless you purchase it in advance online.

As an additional bonus, once you get to Munich, the Bayern Ticket is valid on the trams and U-Bahn for the rest of the day.

It would include travel to the airport if you are travelling by S-Bahn. If your intent is to go from Salzburg directly to the Munich Airport, then you can change trains at the Munchen-Ost station. You don't have to go all the way into the main station.
