Disabled Accomodation
 

Hi
I would like to take my disabled mum and able father on a short break somewhere in the UK and trying to find a cottage properly converted for disabled use (ie not just one ramp and a handrail) preferably with a shower room for wheelchair, wide doors etc. Any suggestions of places or sites would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Holiday Care is a wonderful non-profit organization whose purpose is to help people with disabilitis be able to travel given their challenges. We became members and they helped us with information about accomodations in London 2 years ago at a most reasonable price (my husband uses a wheelchair and needs an accessible shower set up). They have an extensive data base of all types of accommodations which have been inspected to meet crireria for different levels of restricted mobility, numerous discounts are offered. We are now planning a trip to London and Scotland for next spring using their services. There is a membership fee of L15 for people living in the UK and L37.50 for those of us overseas. Well worth the savings and the service while also helping to contribute to allowing other people with disabilities to be able to travel.
Their website is www.holidaycare.org.uk and the telephone numbers for contact are also listed. Very helpful staff - highest of recomendations. Through www.visitscotland.com I was posted "Accessible Scotland - Accommodation for Visitors with Mobility Difficulties." The guide is quite extensive and rates the accommodations by both access requirements and *****'s for standards.
Travel is possible for people with disabilities with a little planning and soooo good for the spirit. Good luck with planning your trip and if I can be of any help, please post.
