Directions from Kenmare to Dingle
Hi, I am driving from Kenmare on our way to the Dingle Peninsula. Now everyone has told me to go to Dingle via the Connor Pass. When I do viamichelin for directions it doesn't include the Connor Pass. Do I have to go further north up to Tralee and then down to Dingle? What do you think is the better way? Thanks. Carole

You need to go to the northern part of the Dingle peninsula to get the connor pass. And yes, tralle is the way to go thru. Or,drive the ring of kerry first and drive the connor pass when leaving dinlge.

Carole:

The Conor Pass road runs north out of Dingle and ends up on the north coast around Castlegregory. You can certainly drive it in either diresction. If you drive south to north (out of Dingle), you will be on the more frightening cliff side of the road.

Bill

Carol,
I agree with the previous posters but I would also suggest purchasing a map as there are lots of roads with poor markings especially out on the peninsulas. You may want to go straight to Dingle then maybe travel a loop back towards Tralee then turning back to traverse the pass from the north. I did it by bicycle a few years back and felt much safer on the inside lane as this road is very narrow with sharp turns, but driveable. Good luck but remember a map. PS I stopped several times on the way up. Very steep!

Carolenap,

The trip over the Conor Pass can be a real treat, most exhilirating. But do note, you need clear skies to make it worth your while.

Heading north from Kenmare, it would probably be wise to go west on R561 from Castlemaine. This road will take you to Inch, and its fabulous drive-on beach (featured in the late 60s epic Ryan's Daughter), and then on to the N86 through Lispole and, finally, Dingle town.

Leaving the Peninsula, experience the Conor Pass by pickng up the Pass road from Dingle town and heading over the Pass to Stradbally. The views along the Pass are wonderful. Yes, the roads are very narrow, but take your time, pull over and get out of your car at the opportune time, and marvel at the scenery. From Stradbally, R560 takes you east towards Camp, then Blennerville, and, finally, Tralee.

Best of luck.
