Direct train from Rome to Pompeii
I have read so many helpful posts but haven't really seen this question. I have booked a direct ES* train from Rome to Pompeii, leaving Rome at 06:45 and arriving in Pompeii at 9:00. I can't find any indication which station it arrives at in Pompeii; in case it's the main station, would someone please give me walking directions to the ruins from there? (We'll be doing the Circumvesuvian train back to Naples/visit National Archaeological Museum/ back to Rome for our return trip.) Thanks for your help.

It has to be the main Trenitalia station because the Scavi station at the ruins' entrance is on the narrow-gauge CircumVesuviana line - tracks smaller so standard-gauge ES trains can't physically go on that line.
Not sure of exact directions but main station is of course in modern Pompeii town and i think about a mile from the ruins. Someone will surely give more details |
We took the train into the main station. I can't remember the route exactly but there are a million signs directing you to "scavi" with a picture of ruins... you can't miss it! We literally had no idea where the train was dropping us off, but we easily found it. As you exit the station, cross the street and walk down the street that is straight in front of you, and you'll see the signs.
It is a walk. A mile might be correct. But we had 3 small kids with us who managed it! |
Thanks to you both for your quick replies; I'm reassured that we'll be able to make our 10:00 reservation for Casa degli Amoini dorati. Thanks.

topping as many talk about going from Rome to Pompeii and that there are indeed direct trains and this makes day trips much more feasible. Not many but there are fast trains between the two.
