going in 2 weeks (OMG!!!) and it's just starting to sink in. I'm non-stop reading here ...

We haven't made any plans for our anniversary which we'll be celebrating over there. I know it sounds stupid to ask ... what's a romantic thing to do in Venice but looking for some unique approaches... we'll have to eat dinner but paying 200 Euro for dinner isn't so romantic no matter how good... so looking for some suggestions being our first trip. It'll be a Sunday as well so I figure some options maybe limited. Looking forward to hearing your suggestions or experiences...

forgot to ask...will I need reservations before we go?? or can we walk in?

Where are you staying in Venice?

I found that I had a wide range of choices on a Sunday. Many restaurants were closed other days of the week like Tue or Wed.

Fine food and a nice but quiet canal side venue can be had if you dine at La Zucca. Dinner for two plus wine should be under 100 Euros. If you want something pricier, the venerable but excellent Osteria Da Fiori would be my choice. The seafood is exquisite, the preparations are creative without being too otherwordly, and there's a bit of old Venice, but the price is going to be well north of 100 Euros (probably under 200 though) if you dine there. Both of these locations are quiet and rather intimate; one is in the Santa Croce District (La Zucca) the other is nearby in San Polo. I don't know if either is open on Sunday, but you should try them while you're in Venice. Reservations are probably needed if you want one of the outside tables at La Zucca and probably for just about any table at Da Fiori. Explore the city, get lost (easy to do) and find yourself again (always fun); it's a delightful place to spend an anniversary or any other time!

yes, I do agree. Thanks you very much for your recommendation. We will be there a few days before our actual anniversary so we're hoping to scope things out on our daily walks. we are staying at Hotel Riva. We'd enjoy good atmosphere/a view even more than food at times and I am sure Venice will satisfy.

Can anyone tell me if eating outdoors in the evenings is common/possible in early October?

We've been in Venice on two different trips in early October. On one, it was nice weather but not quite warm enough for having dinner outside. On the other, yes, it was warm enough. So it just depends on what the weather is like in two weeks! I would say it will definitely be warm enough to eat lunch outside.
