Dinner in Amsterdam/recommendations

We have a one night layover in Amsterdam at the airport in late September before we get on our international flight back to the USA the next day. We arrive at 4p into Amsterdam. We are staying at the Citizen M. We were thinking about checking in and then taking a train into Amsterdam to go have dinner (Tuesday night). Does anyone have a restaurant recommendation for someplace for a dutch dinner under 125 Euro's for 2 people. I was thinking somewhere on the canal but I am open for suggestions? The key is we need it to be easily accessible by rail so we don't have to deal with taxi's and traffic.

Depending on where the restaurant is located, the Connexxion bus 197 express is more convenient from the airport to get to the Museumplein / Leidseplein area.

Route map. https://www.connexxion.nl/dienstregeling/lijn?id=M197
Click "Bekijk route op de kaart" near the top to display the route map.

Additionally, on Connexxion bus, you can hop on with cash and pay on board. With a train, you either need a real chip and pin card to buy tickets using a machine or line up to buy at the train ticket counter with cash, or at travel bureau, such as VVV, which also sells train tickets to Amsterdam.

Much of the bus trip takes place on dedicated public transit lanes not available to normal traffic.

Good info. Thank you for the tip.

good tip on the #197 bus. That will land you right at the Leidseplein area (Museumplein not so much). And right next to the Jordaan area

What do you mean by "dutch dinner". You think there is a specific Dutch cuisine? In Amsterdam there really isn't.

A good international restaurant in Jordaan is De Luwte (on Leliegracht, a canal)

Also

On Herengracht.

PS: book ahead!

Yes, choose an international cuisine. You can go to an Indonesian restaurant for a ricetable.

NO! DON'T DO RICETABLE. OR INDONESIAN RESTAURANTS IN AMSTERDAM

Because, chances are you'll end up in a less than mediocre restaurant. I've given two very solid places.

Our best meals in Amsterdam were at Cafe Loetje and Foodism. Trams make all areas of town fairly easy to get to.

Loetjes steaks are good, but the new Loetjes have strayed far from the original.

The point is, if they land with the #197 they're in a bit of a tram wasteland, transport wise. Easiest is just to walk into Jordaan and not go hunting for elusive tramstops and trams, also because it's such a quick visit.

Thank you. I am going to try and book Brasserie Ambassade. Taking the 197 bus, what stop do we get off? How do I get to the restaurant after getting off the bus? Thank you so much.

You get off at "Elandsgracht": it's the last stop

That location is well inside the Amsterdam core. I have stayed at the hotel above the brasserie. You can also get there equally in total time with a train plus 1 mile walk (more than from the last #197 stop) or train + tram to Spui. There are numerous trams connecting Amsterdam Centraal to Spui. I like #197 as I can just hop on the bus and pay on board with cash as opposed to having to procure "nl" tickets which can be quite time consuming if you don't have a real Chip and Pin card to be able to use a machine. Places selling nl train tickets at Schiphol for cash seem to be chronically mobbed by tourists.

How long will the bus take to get from the Citizen M to the Elandsgracht? Just want to make sure we give ourselves enough time.

menachem Aug 11th, 2017 09:43 AM

greg, trust me #197 to Elandsgracht, then an 8 minute walk is the most time efficient way of getting there and it's a lovely location.

Buses stop at Elandsgracht, which is nearer than the train station. Trust me on that too.

ccarlson, first you need to get from CitizenM to the busstops in front of arrivals.

Bus takes about 40 minutes, all in all. So you can be there in about 50 minutes total. A tram from Amsterdam Central and the walk down Herengracht to Ambassade plus train journey from Schiphol - Amsterdam, takes a little more, I think, plus you have to get to the right tram (anything that goes via Rozengracht)

Remains the convenience of being able to pay with cash as you board and the lines at the ticket window for train tickets.

For transportation you should use https://9292.nl/en it's also available as an app. it gives you all the means of transportation in the whole Netherlands and it's up to date by the minute, just add where you are and the street where you want to go.
For the restaurant if you have a whole night I think you should walk out of the Amsterdam central station and walk towards the damsquare or Leidsplein and you'll find a vast choice of restaurant, on the canal I don't know any but on these streets you'll find anything you want and the prices are not really expensive.
Enjoy it.
