dining near windsor
 

After 2 weeks touring in the UK, we (a group of 6) need a last night celebration restaurant. We are located near Windsor and would like to eat somewhere in the area in a good restaurant with a view of gardens or the thames.

If you can't book the Fat Duck or the Waterside Inn, you might get into the Hind's Head.

It's Heston Blumenthal's gastropub.
It's a bit less formal than a restaurant, but it's a beautiful building and when we have gone there, the food has been very good.

..I havent been there in a few years but the Christopher Wren House might work which is right in Windsor. You probably could get an up date..there is a lovely terrace.

Lcoal feelings (we live very close to Bray) about the Fat Duck are mixed. All our foodie neighbors have dined there and consider it one of those places you go to, check off your list, and then don't go again. However, if you want to try it, you should definitely reserve a table ASAP. We did like the Waterside, so did our neighbors.

Marlow, however, is a prettier town along the Thames with some interesting history...the precursor to Sandhurst is there, Mary Shelley lived there, it's a nice place to stroll around before dinner.

The Vanilla Pod is a very good French restaurant. The owner used to work with famed British chef Gordon Ramsey. Although far less famous, the Vanilla Pod is rated superior to the Fat Duck by many locals. There is no background music at The Vanilla Pod, which may or may not be a good thing for you. Also, it's not large, not the place for a group that likes to spread out around a huge table for dinner. T.S. Elliot lived in the same building; it's where he wrote his famous "Prufrock" poem. And while Marlow is on the Thames, the restaurant is not.

Caution: the Hand&Flowers used to be among the best dining in town, but has sadly slipped badly (I believe the couple that ran the place have split up).

Any thoughts on riverside brasserie (sister to the fat duck) or Stroks?
