Dining alone in Rome
I am a fifty year old man who is traveling alone to Rome for 5 days in September. Does anyone have any suggestions for restaurants that are good for a single diner? My budget is EUR 40-50 for a dinner. Thanks!

What area are you staying at? 40-50 euros for one person seems alot-is that including wine too?
|
40-50 Euro will buy you a full-course meal with wine in most restaurants in Rome. You don't need recommendations specifically for a single diner; most restaurants accommodate them happily.
|
Here are some restos that Keith and I plan on dining at in Rome:
Trattoria Monti--Via San Vita (near St. Maria Maggiore) Buca di Ripetta-36 Via Ripetta (near Ponte Cavour) Da Mario--Via Vite (near Spanish Steps/Via Condotti) Osteria dell Angelo--Via G. Bettolo (near Vatican Museum) Ditirambo--Piazza Cancelleria Thin |
La Carbonara Piazza dei Fiori
inside or out I felt welcome. The wiater also helped me choose a wonderfaul antipasto |
I say head over to Campo di Fiore or Trastevere; you can find a lovely trattoria, maybe with an outside table, and watch the passing scene as you dine. I liked Ristorante de la Scala, along the road to the right of and then behind Santa Maria di Trastevere. I've dined alone a number of times in Rome; really they will take good care of you IME.

I spent two weeks in Italy last October (Venice, Florence and Rome) traveling solo and ate out almost every night by myself. Never had any problems and only had reservations for two of the restaurants I ate at. You should be fine.

It is possible to encounter restaurants that don't want to seat a solo traveler in Italy as they sometimes just want to fill their tables.
|
I like outdoor seating especially when traveling alone and find there are often quite a few tables for 2. If you go a bit earlier than the most people, it is often easier to be seated.
La Carbonara in Campo di Fiori is a good choice with great people watching and lots of outdoor tables. You can also wander the many cafes in Trastevere and find one that appeals. |
Thank you everyone for your helpful responses. I am staying in the Termini area but I'll be wandering all over the city and will probably eat in different neighborhoods. I'll post back here after the trip and let you know how it went.
