Dingle to Galway
We are driving from Dingle through Tralee, Tarbet, taking the car ferry and up through the Burren. We are thinking of doing the Dungaire Castle banquet and want to stay in Galway for a few days. Any ideas on where we could stay- an inexpensive b and b preferably? Should we drive up to Galway after the banquet or stay south of Galway?

You don't mention what time of year, or the time of the banquet. Even the "N" roads get REALLY small, after dark.
;) In June or July, it won't be well and truly DARK until elevenish, but other times of the year, it can be dark as early as 5:00 PM Bob |
There are two shows at the castle- one at 5:30, the second at 8:45. I'm unsure which we can make after our drive.
We plan to stay 3 nights in the area, with one day possibly at the Aran Islands. We'll be there in July. Deb |
Attended the Dunguaire Castle banquet, touristy but great fun. Stayed at the Drumcreehy Guest House in Ballyvaughn, about 20 minutes west of Kinvarra. The Burren is a most unusual area and worth some time, if you have it. Thought Galway city was nice, seems it can be seen in maybe 1/2 day. If you are in Galway or north, you have two options for a day trip. The ferry from Rossaveel or a small plane from Inveran. We took the small plane (15 minute flight)and it was fun. Cost was similar. If you can overnight on the islands, I would recommend it.

Great! Did you stay at Drumcreehy your whole time in the area? Would it be a pain to stay on the ilands, and then drive back to Dublin the next day?

Drumcreehy Guest House is outside town but in a beautiful area where you can see the ocean from the front yard. Stayed two nights. Spend one day driving through the Burren and the coast highway R477. The coast highway is exceptional if you stop and walk near the water. Did drive Galaway to Dublin but we stopped and overnighted along the way. So can not give a driving time but my map shows Galway to Dublin at 136 miles so I would plan on maybe 4 hours. Add the half hour of driving from the ferry or airplane to Galway. Certainly seems doable to go from the Aran Islands to Dublin in day.

Unfortunately the special flowers that occur in the Burren will all be but gone in July as they show themselves in early Spring.
