dingle peninsula, help!

hi there. we are flying to shannon on Sat afternoon, and leaving on Monday afteroon. awhirlwind trip i know but it all we can do! having been to galway, have decided to go to Dingle (I think ring of kerry might be very busy and a bit of a rush with so little time?). I've booked the first night in Dingle and am debating whether to book the 2nd night there too and just explore during the day, or whether to possibly stay somewhere else on 2 nd night? Castlegregory or another 'beach' village? Any tips on the 'best' of dingle peninsula? we like scenery and walking...and the coast! its kind of a special occasion so i want to get the best out of our short time there! any tips would be great!! thanks

Check out the Rick Steve's Ireland book. He has a driving tour of the Dingle peninsula with all the recommended stops outlined.

Hi, will be there myself on the next peninsula down tho. I live in the west of Ireland and have been to Dingle on many occasions, my advise to you is to stay put. Because you have so little time, unpack, unwind as everything (beaches, walks, mountains, pubs, restaurtnts) is within your reach. Dingle is a WONDERFUL base for your short trip. Enjoy!!!!

Hello there! I just love the Dingle.. Ring of Kerry's awesome too but not quite as scenic as the Dingle.. If you can, make your way over the Conor's Pass.. It's an extreme road that leads into the most beautiful natural sights.. I bet your hotel can tell you how to get there and it's on the Dingle. Also, at Slea Head beach there's a wonderful restaurant that overlooks this beautiful beach and they have the best soup and bread.. yum! have fun!

Clarice has given you good advice. For such a short trip, stay put in Dingle. It's beautiful. Our stay there last October was cut short by a storm; really wish we had had more time!

We spent three days in Dingle and thoroughly enjoyed the visit (Oct.'04). Highly recommend taking the Sciuird Archaeology Tours for an informative ride around Dingle Peninsula, seeing sites and sights you no doubt would miss on your own.

Fascinating information presented to small group (mini-bus holds 12, I believe)and you will be picked up and dropped off at your B&B, too! One tour goes west, and the other takes the east side of the Peninsula, and the rides are approximately 2-1/2 to 3 hours long. See Rick Steves' book for more info. Reservations a must (066-915-1606).

It was so nice to sit back and let someone else do the driving in this case, so that we could truly enjoy the scenery and pay attention to all of the fascinating information being presented in such an interesting manner.

Whatever you decide regarding the itinerary, enjoy and have a grand time!

I am just back this afternoon from Ireland and have to say that Dingle was our favorite stop. We flew into Shannon and drove directly to Dingle for 3 nights. After flying all night we arrived in Shannon around 8 am and at the B&B around 1:30pm. (We made no stops along the way, but had a very inefficient service with the car rental and got lost at least twice.)

By the time we got to Dingle everyone was a bit edgy. We took a bit of a nap and then headed out as far as Ventry Beach for an hour or so. Had dinner and called it a night. The next day we did the slea head drive. I think Rick Steves says you can do it in 3 hours, it took us 5 to do just part of it (and that excludes stopping at Ventry Beach). It was pretty amazing. My favorite stops were the Beehive huts and the beach where Ryans Daughter was filmed; here there are hikes that you can do--we didn't have enough time or energy for them. Just before the Ryans D Beach we stopped at a tea and craft shop and picked up a boxed lunch for a picnic on the beach. It is probably one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen and hard to leave. But, we had to go onto the next amazing beach. We were exhausted afer our five hours on the peninsula and cut it shot. I was grateful that we were already checked into our B&B and didn't have to think about moving to another place to stay.

I'm probably rambling, but mostly what I'm trying to say is that I think you should spend 2 nights in Dingle.

We stayed at the Milestone and it was my favorite B&B along the way. Our room overlooked the Dingle Bay, the owners were always looking out for us, the breakfasts were very good, and it was only 35E per night. The best meal we had over our 9 night stay was at Ashe's; it doesn't look too good, but the food was excellent.

Stay another night in Dingle. Donīt stay in Castlegregory. Itīs a not so nice village and very much out of the way!

So Yale ------ what were your favorite B&Bs if the one in dingle was not -- and why.

Planning a trip to I. next May 06 and want to pick good B&Bs.

If you could accept a little higher expense Heaton's guesthouse is a great stay. The hosts are very friendly.

It is situated right on the bay within easy walking to the center of town.

I too would opt for 2 days in Dingle to eliminate all the time lost in moving.

Good luck.

I would suggest the archeological tour. It seems that some of the beehive huts along the road were built by farmers to make a few extra euro. Some of them are only 10-20 years old. I talked to a man who knew a fellow that helped build them. It's a story that doesn't get much press, but I've heard a number of people that would know suggest that it is probably true.

Hello wojazz3!

I couldn't agree with you more re taking the archeological tour (as I listed in an earlier message).

Also, just wanted to say that I appreciate your postings, as well as your wonderful trip reports, which I read in prep for our Oct.'04 trip. Thank you so much!
