Difference in price between Lufthansa and United
 

I compared prices for a flight from Seattle to Riga, Latvia with Lufthansa and with United.

Lufthansa's price is under $900, whereas United's is $1771. Can anyone explain this difference?
Or have I made a mistake?

Did you complete the booking, meanjng selecting your departure and return flights? Maybe the difference is Lufthansa is showing just the departure price. Ive found lots of European airlines show a price for the departure and another for the return, once you select it should show the entire cost. Just a thought.

It can be cheaper to buy a ticket to a farther destination and get off in the connecting city, although the article doesn't explain how you make the return trip. Anyway, the last sentence of the article is a hoot:

“Some airlines really don't like being scammed.” But apparently sticking it to the customer is OK.

Might this be a case where it is worthwhile to cross land in a major European airport (Heathrow? Frankfurt?) and transfer to a low cost European airline?

Why does it surprise you?

I see huge differences on most trips I book . . . between different airlines . . . even between code shares that are actually the same flights.

Unless you're wedded to UA/LH, look also at Delta/KLM through Amsterdam or Delta/AF through Paris.

I see huge differences like that all the time for flights that are far off. Doesn't surprise me at all. I think it happens when one airline just hasn't gotten around to pricing that flight well yet or discounting seats, I don't know, but I see it a lot.

IN your case, without knowing dates, I would suspect the United price includes two stops (DEN and FRA) and the Lufthansa only one. If they are the exact same flight, they should be very similar. I've seen the exact same flights differ by maybe a $100 on the two different airlines' websites who are codesharing.

Peg don't read anything into any seat price.

Last week I got a quote for Manchester to Miami via Atlanta. The price was £550.

In then wondered about just going to Atlanta and the driving slowly down the coast. The price from Manchester to Atlanta was £850, yes £300 more for not taking a longer journey.

Airline ticket pricing has always been and will always be, insane.

If you see a bookable price, just book it.

About 2 months ago, I was deciding where to go next summer. I like to check prices early to get an idea on airfare. It was a toss up between Scotland and Italy. I haven't been to Italy in years and Scotland was just a year ago. I was checking prices out of EWR and airfare for both was running about the same $1900 pp. For the heck of it, I tried PHL which is usually more expensive but only about a 2 hr drive away from EWR. Surprisingly, it was only $979 to Scotland. I thought it was a mistake as I paid $1200 last year so booked it. Italy can wait for another time. It also took a while for the price to show up on all the American Airline partners.

I have often found partner airline codeshare flights are different prices for the same flights.
