Difference between base, economy and super economy trenitalia prices

I presume it has something to do with being able to refund or exchange the tickets but can someone with more experience help me?

Yes. Supereconomy can't be refunded, but you can read each fare rule on Trenitalia. Full fare can be changed, but there are still rules about it (before departure). See if these links work.

The Economy tickets, and especially the Super-economy tickets are available in limited numbers. The Super-economy tickets are usually sold out well in advance of travel date.

Because the discounts are available in all classes, you may sometimes find that there are tickets available in Premium or Business class that cost less than in standard class. On Frecciargento, Frecciabianca and Intercity trains, there are only 1st and 2nd classes, but the principal is the same.
