Die Bahn Website/Länder Tickets
 

Regarding the use of the Die Bahn website, a user on Trip Advisor has posted:

"Just found out one nice new feature of the new version: Länder-Tickets are now shown as a savings fare price option if available for a route."

You still have to change "Means of transport" to "only local transport".

If you click on "Check Availability" when the results is show, it tells you which Länder Ticket is for sale.

I wonder if the DB ticket machines also have this feature now?

I have already learned something useful for future trips to Germany. Stuttgart to Würzburg can be made on the Baden-Württemberg-Ticket.

Yes, I get the same result.

The original poster went out and checked the DB machines. They are showing this same information. This should be very helpful to folks traveling by trains.

She also noted:

"...at the moment DB is installing new ticket machines which combine the functions of the old DB ticket machines (but are faster) and the ones of the local "Verkehrsverbund". For non-locals for sure less confusing than to deal with 2 different ticket machines."

How do I get this thread linked to the "Germany" search function so that folks who can use it will see it?

For example, the Ländertickets for Saxony OR Saxony-Anhalt OR Thuringia have always been valid in all these three states the same day.

I was also amazed and said so. abalada on the Tripadvisor said this has only been true since 1 April 2008, so it is indeed new. How she learns these things is beyond me.

I'm not so sure it's true (although it would be nice). Mannheim is also inside Ba-Wü, but the Bahn website does not show the Ba-Wü-Ticket being available for Mannheim to Würzburg.

Official information on the Bayer-Württemberg-Ticket can be found on the official website of the Baden-Württemberg SPNV, 3-Loewen-Takt.de, and although it indicates the Ba-Wü-Ticket being valid outside of the state into Lindau, Memmingen, Nördlingen, and Ludwigshafen, it does not indicate it is valid to Würzburg.

However, Würzburg, is an Übergangsbereich (adjacent region) to the Verkehrverbund Rhein-Neckar in Baden-Württemberg and Rheinland-Pfalz, and you can use an €8 VRN ticket from Mannheim all the way to Würzburg. A Ticket-24 (all day pass) should also be valid into Würzburg (I assume from as far away as Kaiserslautern), but not for the tranportation system in Würzburg itself.

Be careful with the VRN tickets to Würzbuerg. Some routes go north or south of the Verkehrverbund and are not included. Routes within the Verkehrsverbund go through Mannheim and Osterburken.

Verrry interesting. I tried Karlsruhe, Basel Bad, and Friedrichshafen to Würzburg and got the Baden-Württemberg-Ticket as an option, but when I put in Mannheim or Heidelberg to Würzburg, I did not.

But, aha. The Bahn doesn't show fares on transport run by Verkehrverbünde, so, since Mannheim is inside VRM and Würzburg is an adjacent region, it doesn't show any regional fares, even the Ba-Wü-Ticket. The routes for which regional fares are shown are routes that go outside Ba-Wü.

So, I guess I believe it is true, but it is so new that several official websites (www.3-loewen-takt and www.bahn.de) have yet to pick it up.

It is interesting to note that if you put in Heidelberg to Würzburg for 5 people on the Bahn website, the only routes for which you get fares are those that go out of Baden-Württemburg, and those are, for example, €145 (for 5). However, the VRN website shows that 5 people could make the trip, through Osterburken, with a Ticket-24-Plus, for only €19.

If you "force" the route to be outside of the VRN, by using Stuttgart as a "via", then you see the €27 Ba-Wü-Ticket price. But, if you stay entirely within the VRN, then, they don't show the Ba-Wü-Ticket price, because it is not the lowest fare, but they don't show the lowest fare either. Komisch!
