Willie Walsh, BA’s chief executive, complained publicly at the weekend about the hold-ups in security checks, which he blames on BAA not providing adequate staff cover. But BAA, which described the situation as “the biggest security crisis in aviation history in this country”, said it was impossible to blame anybody.More than 500 pieces of luggage for Frankfurt failed to make it there on Sunday and were shipped out on Monday instead, and BA said many other European destinations had been affected.

Maybe his bags went there.

I do hope that I'm travelling on the same plane as Faina - I adore massages! For that I might take some cash out of my Janie Bond secret compartment bra and give the masseuse a nice tip!!

All kidding aside there will be TSA standards at each airport but there can also be additional restrictions at certain airports.

The carryon issue changes daily. I just posted British Airway's latest directive regarding carryon (starting 8/15). Everyday seems to bring new rules

I flew a domestic route yesterday. No limitation on carry on luggage other than liquids/gels/makeup. No problem with laptop, i pod and other electronics. Line wasn't any worse than usual at LGA.

This is a very interesting thread, and I hope people who fly continue to add their experiences to it, as it lets everyone know what is going on at this and that airport, domestic and international flights, and what the individual experiences have been at the checkpoint-this is one of the most useful and timely threads going on this board.

I should have added, I'm particularly interested to see how the "up to 4 oz. of non-prescription liquid medications" is being interpreted at the various checkpoints.

"You're going on vacation!" Right. To Africa in Sept. A trip of a lifetime and VERY expensive. I can do fine without carrying water, sunscreen, chapstick, toothpaste, computer, or IPod onto the plane. But you are damn right I do care about my camera equip. I've read all the latest updates, and they're changing almost by the minute. I had a BA official tell me today--after she consulted with her superior--that passengers on BA flights originating in the US are not allowed ANY carryon luggage. But when I revisited the BA site, the updated message said that carryons would be permitted--with a caveat re. connections to other destinations after London. Maybe you carry all your vacation memories in your head. Good for you, but don't lecture or belittle the many of us who consider the the photos of our vacations an integral part of them.

Thanks wanderlust5 for starting this thread.

I have agree with JandaO and steeliejim - pictures are a valuable part of my vacation experience. I hope BA will allow cameras as carry-ons when I fly in September (thank goodness they're allowing books again).

I forgot to mention on strange thing that happened on the plane. The lady sitting next to me (who turned out to be from my college class over 20 years ago!! and was also traveling with her children) was approached by a flight attendant and told that one of their suitcases had split open and she needed to come down below in the hold and repack it. Well that turned out to be a cover because they thought her 15 year old son had a gun in his suitcase. They asked her to upack the suitcase and explain what was inside. It was a souvenior her son had bought in Venice that looked like a gun (but was not) and once she showed them it she was allowed back on the plane.

Yes, the passport check was news to me especially since it caused people to miss their connecting flights. As everyone has said, its a day to day experience. Good luck to future travelers and sorry for the grammar mistakes, I had a bit of jet lag. itsv.

All teachers know that many students can't and don't read very well.
Why not play it smart and travel with nothing but required paperwork?
Almost everything posted here is anecdotal.
Travellers concerned with dress need observe the costumes on display at Heathrow. T-shirts, jeans and trainers.

steeliejim - ah, just buy a cheap digital or disposable while you're there. You may have to sneak up a little more on that lion pride to get a good shot with that little cardboard box. But as long as you had a safe flight, you shouldn't mind, right? Here's a for those who don't know I'm kidding.

I'd agree to stop enjoying photography so much on my trips if everyone agrees to stop dining out during theirs.

And the British Airways website http://www.britishairways.com/travel...s/public/en_us has an updated--as of this a.m.--advisory re. what can be carried on covering whether one is arriving in/departing from, or xferring through London. No specific prohibition of camera gear, and I think I can stuff my "stuff" into the one small carryon allowed from the US xferring through.

Just came home from CDG Paris yesterday and they had the normal security just past check-in - walk through the metal detectors - and they also had a security check at the gate. The lines were tremendously LONG for the second security as the gate was being used for flight to both Chicago and WDC. They finally separated the flights into two lines, but made the WDC people wait until all the Chicago people were screened since that flight was leaving first.

Everyone single person was pat searched, including toddlers, and every piece of hand luggage was hand searched. Any liquid, gel or cream is confiscated now - one lady's mascara was taken! Judging from the length of the line and number of people waiting, I figured we would leave about 5 hours late, but somehow, they managed to get us out of there on time. The people coming through screening just walked right onto the plane - nice to avoid the bottlenecks in the aisles. We were there early so avoided most of the longest lines.

But Heathrow always has security at the gate, at least they did the 7 times I've flown out of there. You go through security, then when your gate is announced, they go through your bag..I think you also go through a metal detector again.
