Diabetic menu for low carb diets
I'm flying to China next week on Continental (coach class). I've been following a low carb diet for several years, so I chose the diabetic menu, assuming it would be the closest I could get. Anyone know if this is a good idea and what the diabetic menu is likely to consist of?
PS: I know that China is not in Europe, but it's a general question and this board gets more traffic.

I think you had better contact the airline and discuss your menu choices with them. I would never assume a diabetic meal would be low carb, it may be high in complex carbs (you never know what they think diabetic means). Maybe you need to take some of your own food, if you care a lot about this (like nuts). I don't usually eat a lot of carbs just by preference, although I don't think about it that much, it's just my natural choice. I just eat selectively from regular meals, although a diabetic meal might have less carbs and should have less simple sugar added. For example, I don't eat the desserts or rolls, usually. Maybe what you ordered is your best choice on an airline, though.

A diabetic meal will probably contain less carbs than a general offering, but is still likely to have 30-60 grams of carbs; that can be lowered by omitting the obvious items such as rolls, pasta, potato, or other carb-dense foods.

For those interested, the diabetic diet worked pretty well, and I think I'll do the same on the next trans-Atlantic trip. While the meals (three in all)contained things that I don't usually eat, like potatoes, rice, and bread, they were easy to skip. And it eliminated the carb richest items like cheesecake or ice cream. Plus the salads seemed better than the regular fare.
