Detuch Marks and Lira Still Useable?
 

While going thru and cleaning out drawers for a possible move, we have found detuch marks and lira. Not a lot, but wondering if that currency is still good and if we can still use them.

No, but you can exchange them for euro at the National Banks of each country. If that's not practical I suggest you give them to UNICEF or another charity that will accept them, convert them, and put them to good use.

When I was wandering around La Rochelle in December, I went past a large china store that had a sign in English taped to their window: "We Accept French Francs."

I assume they'd give you the official franc to euro conversion then take the francs to the Bank of France.

I didn't think businesses were allowed to do this but they were advertising it.

I know of one town in Germany that has started trading again in Marks as a protest to the Euro. I suppose it will have about as much impact as the British grocer that was fined for still selling in imperial weights.
Remember, when it comed to following European laws, the French like to think that they are exempt - and good luck to them as they at least have the guts to stand up to their Government when they don't like things.

If it were me, I'd pack a small bag, including those currencies, book the next available flight to Munich and Rome, visit a large central bank and see if they accept them for exchange. If they don't, keep them for souvenirs and head for the nearest biergarten or wine tavern. Then, I'd fly home after a couple of days of sightseeing. Yeah...it's a crazy idea but it's my fantasy!
