desperate for worldly advice
 

Our family is planning a trip that will originate in Interlaken Switzerland (4-5 days)and conclude 10 days later in Paris. We have never been to Europe and have only days to put together an itinerary. We are staying in a home in Interlaken (at no cost)but must keep our costs down for the remainder of the trip. We are a family of five (one adult child, two young boys 10-12). Any advice (i.e lodging, transportation, sights, estimated costs)or proposed itineraries would be so greatly appreciated.

I have only been to italy for family trips. and spent a few days in Paris, and Brugge, so really no help on specifics.
But, whatever you do will be fine.

How long are you going to be in Paris before you leave there? Will you be wanting to spend a couple of days there?
If so, then I think you need to decide what, if any, places you'd want to visit in between Paris and Interlaken.
You'll get better advice if you ask about specific places as well as adding any specific interests you might have.
As to travel, are you considering moving about by rail or by car? All of these pieces of info would be of further help to others who want to offer advice.

There is plenty to do and see in the Berner Oberland around Interlaken. Firstly, buy Junior cards for any children under 16 - they cost 20chf each, are valid for a year, and your children go free on all the transport with you. You could go up the Schilthorn and the Jungfrau, and take lovely hikes from Grindelwald - hike from First to Bachalpsee, or grosse Scheidegg, take the cable car to Mannelichen and hike to Kleine Scheidegg, take the children up the Pfingsted cable car to the summer tobogan. In Interlaken, go up to Harder Kulm, and the Heimwehfluh, and perhaps consider a day at the Mystery Park, or the Ballenberg Museum. If you want one expensive activity, you could go white water rafting, or do a tandem paraglide from First. Walk in the Lauterbrunnen valley, and see the Trummelbach Falls, and walk on to Stechelberg. We spent a fortnight last year in Grindelwald (near Interlaken) and did something different every day! And we had children with us - 7 of them, aged 17 to 8 and our 10 year old got to do the tandem paraglide. We didn't go to restaurants, but the supermarkets weren't too expensive, and we had a picnic most days. Try an Ibis hotel in Paris - they aren't too dear, and sleep 3 in a room.(Look up www.accor.com)
