designer dress fabric find

On the riverfront in Zurich, within 5 minutes walk of the main train station, is the most wonderful shop which sells dress fabrics by all the top designers like Dior etc. It was shut unfortunately but the fabrics looked marvellous.I'm sorry I can't be more specific about its location. It was on the same side of the river as the station and near a market. Well worth the effort to find if you sew or have a dressmaker.

Hi salthegal, although I have never been to Zurich I was interested in your thread as I absolutely love beautiful fabrics! I spent a whole afternoon in Florence with a friend of mine in Italy as we went from fabric store to fabric store (a bit out of the historical center). I thought I had died and gone to heaven.

I don't sew well enough to sew anything from a gorgeous piece of fabric but I just wanted to share what I learned in a smaller city in the region of Veneto,Italy. There was a wonderful fabric store. The owner knew fantastic dressmakers. She made an appointment for me with one of the dressmaker (one of my friends had used this dressmaker also btw). Within three days I had two beautiful dresses for so much less than if I had purchased comprable dresses in dress shops. It took three appointments. One to deliver the fabrics and to discuss the styles (no pattern needed)and to be measured. Late the next afternoon for a fitting and again late the next afternoon to pick the dresses up and pay for them (after another fitting to make sure everything was perfect). So maybe other fabric stores could connect one to a fantastic dressmaker if one had three or four days in one location to do this.

I always feel that looking at fantastic fabric is like looking at beautiful works of art. Thanks for bringing back beautiful memories!

Hi salthegal,

I was so excited when I saw your thread. That store in Zurich sounds wonderful. I love to sew, and thought bringing home some fabric from Paris would be a fun and unique souvenir. Do you have any fabric store suggestions for this city? Or, if not a specific shop, perhaps an area known to have these stores. Thanks.

In Paris, try Bouchara - While this store has some great houseware and linen items, the real reason to stop here is the Fabrics.  These are designer worthy fabrics for both fashion and home.  And unless you have ready access to a major métropolitan wholesale district, the range and quality can’t be beat for these prices.  If you have any interest or talent in sewing, this is a store you must check out.

Bouchara - 54 bd Haussmann, 9e. across from the Galleries Lafayette. Fabrics on on the second floor.

In Paris try Marche St Pierre, http://www.marche-saint-pierre.fr/

There a a bunch of little fabric stores on the way to the marche, from the metro. I preferred it to Bouchara but I did purchase some trim from Bouchara.
