Denmark or Sweden?

Hi everyone,

We are considering travelling to Iceland for a week in July and combining it with a week in either Sweden or Denmark.

We would spend a few days in either Stockholm or Copenhagen and take a few days to see some of the countryside.

This will be our first trip to northern Europe so which would you choose?

Thank you very much.

Stockholm is more beautiful than Copenhagen, but Copenhagen has better food and is a cool city. Both are small cities so seeing them both is entirely possible. Copenhagen has more to see outside of the city ie day excursions, Stockholm has the archipelago and a trip on the ferry to Helsinki is a must. I would research the cities and what they have to offer, choose whichever appeals and leave out seeing the countryside.

Do you prefer fish or meat ?

I like fish and I like meat, sometimes I'm in a mood for fish, sometimes I am in a mood for meat.

Same applies to Copenhague and Stockholm.

We like both fish and meat.

So, for first timers to Northern Europe, which would you choose?

We cannot choose, it is your trip, YOU must choose, after informing yourselves with travel videos, guidebooks from your local library, trip reports on this site and tripadvisor and so on.

Odin summed up the major differences, now it is up to you to do your own homework.

Come back with specific questions, by all means, but don't ask us here to make a choice - WoinParis said it, "sometimes...sometimes..."

If future trips may not include Scandinavia then I would choose Stockholm, especially since you are going in July. We were there the first week in September, and many museums and attractions seemed to have shortened hours or closed on days that they would have been opened in the summer.

With Copenhagen, you can combine future trips with more of Denmark and traveling to central Europe. I would follow everyone else's advice posted above, which is excellent advice. We traveled to both cities for the first time in late August and we enjoyed them both equally.

Here's my photos. Often I decide where to go based on what 'grabs' me from the pictures. See which one is more to your liking. But I think Odin gave a good description.

YOU need to look at a couple of guide books and pick out what YOUR must sees would be in either place. It's like walking into a restaurant and asking us what you should have for dinner. How do we know your likes and dislikes?

Once you have some more specific questions people here can help a lot more.
