Denmark and Netherlands and maybe Hamburg in 10 days

Hi everyone,

I am going to Denmark in the first week of september . Flying into CPH and flying out of AMS I have exact 10 days to vacation. I was thinking of doing 3 days in Copenhagen then 3/4 in hamburg or colgne and then 3/4 in Amsterdam . I like seeing historic stuff (especially WW2 sites), eating and drinking local and not opposed to seeing new places/things.

What do you guys think ? For those who have been to these countries do you recommend exploring around CPH and AMS only or I should spend 3/4 days in each and see another city?

Appreciate your response , thank you in advance.

If you >> have exact 10 days to vacation.<< . . . does that mean 10 days total including your travel days to CPH and home from AMS? If so you really only have 7.5 days free to see and do things. If so, squeezing in Hamburg will be tough. So please clarify . . . is your whole trip 10 days OR is it 2 travel days plus 10 days on the ground?

I have 10 days excluding inbound and out bound flights

Even with 10 days on the ground, I would be hard pressed to find time for Copenhagen and Amsterdam in 10 days on the ground -- assuming a day trip or two from each city. BUT your interests might differ from mine; you would do well to consult some guidebooks to decide what, exactly, you want to see and do. Good luck!

Yes split time between Copenhagen and Amsterdam - fly between them. If taking trains these sites have everything you need to know about European trains- www.seat61.com; BETS-European Rail Experts and www.ricksteves.com - if taking trains yes Hamburg area would make a good short stop but again just both Copenhagen and Amsterdam are great cities - maybe do a day trip from each.

Amsterdam - Copenhagen is 12 hours by train. There used to be a night train to CPH, but alas, no more.

There also used to be an overnight or longer ferry between Copenhagen and Amsterdam - think it is now some kind of cruise stopping at a few places but could be a neat diversion.

There is no ferry between the two. A cruise is a cruise not a ferry.
Fly between the two cities.

thank you everyone for responding , i guess I'll stay in ams and cph and look for day trips from both cities.

I've taken about all the feasible day trips from both - will come back and suggest some - easily done by train but I'd spend three whole days at least in each.

I doubt it, to be honest. If you look at where Copenhagen is situated geographically, that can never be an overnight ferry. Nighttrains to Paris, Ferries from Amsterdam to Copenhagen: what are those miracle transport options of which you speak?

I don't think you'll regret that choice! My favorite day trip from Copenhagen is Roskilde; my favorite day trip from Amsterdam included a variety of locations -- one where there were windmills and a chocolate factory; Edam; Marken, Volendam. You have a LOT of other options from either city, and those options should all be covered in any decent guidebook.

You have to cut Pal some slack --- its hard to recall details from that long ago.

Helsingor and 'Hamlet's Castle' is a great easy day trip from Copenhagen by train.

There are so so many neat day trips from Amsterdam- Delft is one of my favorites - neat old town and can visit the iconic Delftware Porcelian Factory/Museum - easy by train. Windmills? Yes as kja says Zaanse Schanse just a short train ride from Amsterdam is great for that - Alkmaar has its famous Friday mornings Cheese Market - Utrecht is a neat larger town with lots to see - and just so so many more - so plan on at least one day trip- just buy tickets at station day of train - see www.ns.nl - Dutch Railways for schedules.
