Delphi, Meteora, and Zagoria accommodation

I'm looking at the possibility of planning another fly/drive for 2 weeks in Greece, this time taking in Delphi, Meteora, Zagoria and then down to the coast to either (or both) Parga and Ag. Nikitas on Lefkas. We've visted some of these on day trips in the past but other than Parga, not stayed overnight. We will probably flying by charter to Preveza but could also do this from Athens. Does anyone know of any mid-priced accommodation that they would recommend in any of these areas? Also, does anyone know the Mesolongi area and if is is worthwhile visiting and/or staying overnight anywhere round there?

Any advice gratefully received, thanks, Maria

I've been looking into hotels in Delphi and it seems the best I've found are the King Iuiohos Hotel or the Hotel Acropole (also called the Hotel Acropolis).

Last year we stayed in the Hotel Varanos in Delphi. It was fine, rooms were a bit small, but clean. Very reasonable rates for 2 rooms. Lobby was adorable.

I've heard there are some nice places to stay in Arahova which is right next to Delphi. It might be less touristy.

Thanks! The hotel Acropole looks interesting and I'll look into the others too.

Any ideas for Meteora or the rest of the trip?

We liked the Hotel Kastraki in (guess!) Kastraki, the smaller town next to Kalambaka at the foot of the Meteora cliffs. It is simple, but has great views to the stunning landscape. We were there 10 years ago, but I notice it is still getting good reviews on tripadvisor.com

In Delphi, we stayed at Hotel Varonos. I loved it. Really funky decor, beautiful rooms, outstanding view. The rate was 65 euros with breakfast included.

In Meteora, we stayed at Archontiko Mesohori, in the "Old Habitation, Kastraki Village." It was definitely off the beaten path. There were signs directing you there, but we thought there was no way a hotel could be down these narrow, narrow streets and among these somewhat run-down village homes. You definitely cannot walk to dinner or anywhere from the hotel, because it is too far away from the main town.

It was a bit pricier, 105 euros, but the rooms are suites, with bedroom, bathroom, living room (with fire place),a kitchen and a balcony. It was very modern, clean and comfortable. It had a great breakfast too.

It can be seen here:

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Archontiko Mesohori looks particularly appealing. Where did you go to eat from there - is there no restaurant at the hotel?

Archontika are great places to stay in Greece. If the one in Meteora is full, we stayed at the Hotel Divani, doesn't have the character of an archontiko but it was a good hotel and you could walk to restauants.

For our trip to Delphi, we stayed in Galaxidi which is about half hour past Delphi on the coast at the Art Hotel Arxontiko, quite modest, all the rooms have different themes. You could walk to the lovely seafront for restaurants, although we found the best food in restaurants away from the seafront.

Thanks Odin, all is booked now and just over a month until we go.

For Delphi, we're staying in nearby Arachova

For Meteora in Archontiko Mesohori

For Zagoria we're staying here:

We then have a week in an apartment in Agios Nikitas on Lefkada to relax. I'm realy looking forward to this trip.

Hi again Maria!
We are having a 4 week road trip on the mainland before heading to Crete for 2 weeks.
been to all these places 6 years ago and now so happy to be returning.
The only place I would recommend to you is Dupiani House. Look at this website
http://www.ecogreek.com/Meteora.html
The view is spectacular and it's nice and quiet. We intend to stay here this visit too.

Hi there Carylspall - 6 weeks in Greece, how fantastic, though I can't complain, as this is our second 2 week holiday this year, having already had a family holiday in Crete in June. Sounds like we're following you around, if you are in Zagoria in early September -we will be there at the end of the month. What's your itinerary?

carylspall Aug 18th, 2008 06:04 AM

We are flying into Thessaloniki where we will stay 2 nights (to get into the Greek pace of life -hopefully!)then we pick up our hire car and start driving. We haven't got a proper itinerary -nothing booked until we fly to Chania on the 1st october.
This is a trip to celebrate my husband's early retirement. We hope it will be fairly relaxing!
Did you enjoy Crete in June Maria?

Maria_H Aug 18th, 2008 07:15 AM

There is nowhere quite like Greece to be relaxed! Hope you have a great trip, a great way to start your husband's retirement. We loved our trip to Crete with the family, my report and link to some pictures are on here if you didn't see it:
