is there more then one making delts porcelin?

Yes there are at least three Delftware manufacturers in Delft, Holland. The most famous for tours is the Porcelain Fles (sp?), about a mile south of the town center, on a canal. Here you see the artists transfering designs to the ceramics, there is a museum on vintage Delftware stuff, including the famous Christmas plates, and you can buy seconds as well as regular Delftware - but always beware of factory prices as shops often can be as cheap or cheaper due to competition.
Much of the cheap Delftware look-a-like stuff sold in holland - the tacky windmills, shoes, etc. is not authentic Delftware, which should have the official Delftware symbol emprinted on the bottom of the piece. Much of the cheap junk, which may say painted in Holland, may not even be made in Holland.
If buying Delftware is your goal then shops in Amsterdam are as good a bet as any so look for the authentic Delftware shops there too.
But Delft is a wondrous town with centuries old buildings lining quaint canals - this is a great reason for going there as well as the very interesting Delftware factory tours.

Has anyone visited the Royal Tichelaar Makkum pottery factory? We'll have to get there, because they are my husband's ancestors.

In September of 2002 we stopped at Delft on a trip back from Amsterdam--picked up a couple of small (!!!) pieces at De Candelaer and got a little tour to boot.

that should be 'still making handmade Delftware'; there seem to be at least two other 'factories' also claiming they are the only 'authentic' makers of Delftware. Porcelain fles says the only maker of handmade Delftware - doesn't mean that other factories don't make 'authentic' Delftware.

Porceleyne Fles or Royal Delft is the most famous and is well known world wide.You can tour the plac(free) and buy in the shop. Often there are also very nice "seconds", worth the price.

Other "Handpainted: Delft is cheaper to buy but is not seen as the original.

Makkum or Tichelaar is way up north in NL, best to reach by car as public transport may be difficult.
Very nice (and expensive) colorful. Against a small fee you can make a factory tour too. Also here I have seen "seconds" or stuff that goes out of their collection.
