decent budget hotel for family of 5 in rome
My husband and I are traveling with parents, along with our 6 yr.old, to city of rome for 5 nights Oct.17.Are there any decent hotel that will accommodate all of us in 1 room comfortably for about $100 or less? Don't laugh. Preferably in the middle of all the major attractions.

I am afraid this might not be possible, especially if you want to stay near the major attractions. I was going to suggest convents in the area, but I am afraid they may also be too expensive.
You may want to investigate renting an apartment. You might be able to save some money by eating the meals at home. Even so, I believe you might have a hard time finding something reasonable. I hope someone can come up with a good idea. Good luck! |
We went to Italy in May and paid 130 euros for a smelly and somewhat dirty B&B that I would not recommend to anyone. We stayed right next to the Pantheon so I realize we paid for the location.
It didn't ruin our trip but after walking all day, we were tired and it would have been nice to get back to a nice room that didn't smell. With that being said, I don't think that you will find accomodations for that price and if you do, would you really want to stay somewhere where you will not be comfortable? I'm not in anyway trying to be mean but I would just hate for you to go to Rome and have to stay somewhere where you end up with a place like where we stayed. Can you cut other corners in your budget and pay a bit more for a room? I also suggest looking into an apartment. RomeBy.com and I think venere.com also lists them. Good luck! |
Renting or booking an apartment is new to us for vacation. Please recommend one for about $100-$150. Are they managed by agencies or owners? Sould I also look into pensiones? That's also new to me. We're not into frills, as long as it's clean and safe area, and has shower and bed, it's good enough--any way we're more into sight-seeing. Any tips and suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Hi
This is a tough one! Apart from a hostel which is not a good option for your family situation an apartment is your best chance on your budget. This one is for 4 people but you may be able to ask the owner to squeeze your child in - http://www.alloggiaroma.com/apartmen...gs-in-rome.htm Good luck |
Holy cow! I would hot have believed that you could find such a good match to your rather phenomenal requirements! You should send a REALLY nice thank you to worldinabag, imua!
<<This one is for 4 people but you may be able to ask the owner to squeeze your child in ...>> Actually, the website DOES say... "It's in a very quiet street, has a wide and bright living room, very well furnished, with air conditioned, Tv Sat, DVD, Doble bed and sofa bed, ideal to host 4 persons, but we can add a bed, so that we can host 5 persons." on the webpage of their <i><b>sister</b></i> property... http://www.alloggiaroma.com/apartmen...st-in-rome.htm at a rate of 110 to 180 euro (145 euro for the dates you are seeking). |
One further thought...
<< we were tired and it would have been nice to get back to a nice room that didn't smell...>> I think that scarcely any proprietor wants a guest who is dissatisfied, and has this kind of complaint. "Smell" is a very subjective thing, and I think that any traveler, faced with this problem, needs to get the management into the room with you and try to identify the cause of the offending odor. It might, or might not, even be identifiable to the owner - - but if you can at least get an agreement on what it is you smell, then and only then... can you make any progress towards remedying the problem - - either by removing/mitigating... or relocating you... or discounting the price. |
try venere.com and romeaparthotels.com. i've used both in the past.
Another factor to keep in mind is stairs. I rented an apartment for 4 in rome (near piaza navona) for < 100 euros in november. It was a great apartment, but was 80 steep stairs up. It wasn't too much of an issue for us, but you do mention both a child and parents. The apt we rented was via romeaparthotels and was called apt2. I'll try to dig up contact details. |
ah, this is the one: http://www.romeaparthotels.com/properties/73.htm
Don't know if a 5th person could be accomodated though. |
4 adults plus one child in one (small) hotel room with one bathroom and for 5 nights, and to be accommodated "comfortably" in the middle of the major attractions? And for about 85 euro per night?
Not hardly. Stay one night less, or expand the budget. The convents I think have some family rooms but I don't know about 5 in one room, and the caveats about places lacking elevators may be important to you. good luck |
Hostels could work fine. You could get a room that would accommodate 5 (or maybe one that would accommodate 6). But the price range might still be tough.
One not-so-conveniently-located hostel is the HI hostel in Rome, and it would be cheap enough. http://www.ostelloonline.org |
For an inexpensive, well located small hotel, investigate the Residenza San Panteleo. We stayed there a few years ago and paid about 90 euros for a huge room with 2 beds. It's definitely not 4*, but it was clean and in a fabulous location.
