Decaf Coffee

I love coffee, but can't have the high test with caffeine for health reasons. What are my chances of getting decaf coffee in most Italian cafes/restaurants, and how do I ask for it in Italian. Grazie

Travis May 10th, 2002 11:36 AM

Out of 11 restaurants we asked none of them had decaf. Sorry

......Haag or Decaf

Barb May 10th, 2002 11:55 AM

Judi--the Italian word for decaffeinated is decaffeinato<BR>phonetically-- day cahf fay ee NAH toe<BR><BR>you can also say "un caffe senza caffeina"<BR><BR>Or order "un caffe Hag" it's a brand name, like Sanka, and is well known

Barb's response is on the money. I found deacf readly available but usualy<BR>with a hitch. Most of the time its not the beans ground fresh like caffinated. But a side bag of preground cafe. You just loose a litle on flavor.

Amazingly, I only drink decaf at home, but was drinking the real stuff (a daily morning macchiato or espresso) without a problem. The coffe is so good that I was spoiled when we got back after 2 months and switched to tea!

Ask the manufacturers which solvents they use to extract caffeine from the coffee bean, and how much solvent is left in. Hopefully only traces. take the real thing, so long as you dont overdose
