Dec. 22-27 in SW France

We will be meandering in France from Dec. 22 - 27. We land in Toulouse and have to be in Paris Dec. 27. Where should we head for Christmas Eve and Day.? My husband and I are wanderers.

I would stick to large towns and cities. I associate seafood and the month of December, so I would choose La Rochelle as a place to be. But if bad weather is predicted coming from the Atlantic, I would consider the Languedoc (Narbonne, Montpellier) as an alternative. Take the train back to Paris.

Michael is correct about places to stay. You need to probably make sure a restaurant is open on Christmas Eve and Day and maybe pre-book a seat. On the back to Paris, I would fly Easyjet or another cheap airline if you have minimum luggage. Check skyscanner.com for flights, etc. If you do decide on the train, book early to get reduced prices. If Eurostar, book 90 days out, otherwise book 60 days out.

Note that dinner on 24 December is normally a family event.

Restaurants will have special (long !) menus and often provide live music and dancing. Lunch on the 25th is rather light as many will be rather jaded from the 24th revelries.

No guarantees with the weather, but many eat seafood outdoors along the Languedoc coast on the 25th. Days are longer in the South and the weather is generally more stable. I've experienced -15C and snow on the Atlantic coast over Xmas !

We like to wander as well, but probably a good idea to have some firm plans for the 24th and 25th. As already mentioned, restaurants and hotels will offer large set menus for the evening of the 24th and I think I've seen some adverts for Christmas lunch in past years. The ads will start appearing within the month and will also be on web sites. Seafood will be a major feature.

What are your plans regarding time in Toulouse versus heading up toward Paris? Do you want to head toward the Med then maybe take the TGV up to Paris from Marseille or Avignon or did you want to drive up to Paris over the 5 days?
