Debit card usage in Norway
 

I've read the past forums (from Jan-Feb) on this subject but wondered if anyone could give me updates.

I'll be traveling in Norway (Oslo and Bergen only) in late September and I am worried that my non-chip debit card won't work there. All of my hotel rooms are booked and paid for in advance but I will need to purchase food, etc.

Any insights?

You should be able to use your debit card to get cash from an ATM if the card is connected to your checking account. No chip is required for ATMs. While I know that some stores in Scandinavia are trying to get away from the use of cash, I expect they still accept it. It isn't really a great idea to use a debit card for purchases, as debit cards issued in the US don't provide the same fraud protections as credit cards

Visa and MasterCard are accepted everywhere, but you will need a pin code for ATM and ticket machines.
Magnetic stripe hasn't been in use for years here and out in the districts it's possible (but unlikely) you may find shop assistents unfamiliar with the swipe and sign system, or even card machines that don't work with it.
Using a debit card is normally the cheapest solution - cash always costs - whether in exchange or ATM fees - just make sure you don't have any ridiculous foreign exchange fees.
